December 2020 Newsletter

Letter from the Editor

Hello to all! We hope you are doing well and staying healthy. For those in the US, we hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. While we're now into the holiday season, there's no shortage of news on the smart buildings front. However, we don't have the same number of pieces to share as the past few months.

Additionally, we're now on a monthly cadence, so this is all the news for November. In addition to publishing this digest, Aamidor Consulting remains hard at work on a range of interesting projects. The end of the year has been unusually busy for us, but we'd always like to hear from you.

One other note on project work: We've been working on a few partnership-related projects, helping firms identify the right types of partners and channels to market for their offerings. We are big proponents of teaming in the smart building space, and would love to talk more if your firm is looking to expand or improve your technology stack - just reach out

And, last month we heard from a few firms looking to join a team for the DOE's Connected Communities FOA. If you are interested too, please reach out.

If you are trying to get through the newsletter quickly, here are a few high level takeaways:

  1. Investments and acquisitions continue at a healthy pace, though the market is not quite as active as the summer.
  2. Returning to the office remains key question facing many companies in 2021, though we haven't seen quite as many articles about it.
  3. Of all the topics we tend to cover, sustainability seems to have the most momentum, with a number of groundbreaking developments this month - from the Federal Reserve to the United Kingdom, primarily focused on disclosure of climate risks.

We have not published any articles over the past few weeks, but Joe Aamidor did speak on a couple of webinars and virtual conferences:  a webinar follow up to a presentation at Realcomm and OpTech, organized by the National Multifamily Housing Council.

We're watching all of this and are happy to have a conversation. Please reach out if you want to chat.

Aamidor Consulting Market Resources. We've been tracking all the key industry partnerships and have summarized them on this readily available site. And, don't forget that we have summarized key M+A activity here.

As always, we look forward to hearing from you about how we might help with your product and market strategy needs. We also hope you enjoy this edition of Smart Building Insight.

Investment News

  • New funding rounds and investments:
  • Acquisitions:
    • Blackstone is acquiring Therma, a mechanical and energy efficiency services firm. This has some benefits for Blackstone's own portfolio but also fits nicely with some of their software investments. Moreover, the HVAC and energy services space has been going through some consolidation over the past few years - and we expect this to continue.
      • Blackstone also is acquiring RE Tech - a sustainability and energy consulting firm that will be integrated into Therma.
    • We continue to see SPACs with at least an interest in proptech and energy, including these two:
  • There is just one new partnership this month, with Belimo and Facilio announcing a partnership around IOT in commercial buildings
