On Sunday, November 10, 2019, as part of its commitment to presenting new and lesser-known choral music of great quality, the 90-voice GMChorale will present the Middletown premiere of New Every Morning, a multi-movement newly-commissioned choral work by the highly-regarded, award-winning Connecticut composer Peter Niedmann.

Composed for mixed choir, soprano soloist, and organ, New Every Morning was commissioned by the First Congregational Church in Cheshire to mark the renovation of the  church's historic Aeolian-Skinner Organ. The new music will have its first performance at First Congregational Church during worship on November 3, then the GMChorale will present a public performance on November 10 in the beautiful Santo Fragilio Performing Arts Center in Middletown.

Artistic Director Joseph D'Eugenio says of this new music: “Peter Niedmann’s setting of joyful texts by two great English churchmen-poets and from several favorite Psalms is a rich musical tapestry that is by turns comforting, celebratory, and uplifting. The music dances with pronounced rhythmic underpinnings and shifting meters, sublime harmonies and a cappella sections, and a virtuosic accompaniment that sparkles and enlivens the choral writing.”

The music of award-winning composer Peter Niedmann is widely performed throughout the United States and has garnered continued critical acclaim. His choral music has been sung at The White House and at a Papal Mass for Pope John Paul II. In the Ending of the Year, for chorus and orchestra, was singled out by American Record Guide magazine as the best new piece on Harvard University Choir's CD, Carols from the Yard. The American Organist magazine has praised his music as "thoughtful, well-wrought, and appealing." In 2019, Peter Niedmann won the Fyfe Prize—an international competition—for composition of a new anthem.

The November 10 program also includes evocative choral music by John Rutter, David Conte, Dan Forrest, and James Mulholland, composers whose works are admired as contemporary classics. Allan Conway accompanies from the piano. Soprano Melissa Clark is the featured soloist in New Every Morning; violinist Christa Berezowskyj and pianist Garrett Artman join Mr. Conway in folksong settings by Dan Forrest.

We are thrilled that composer Sarah Meneely-Kyder will give a pre-concert talk beginning at 3:15 in the auditorium, offering a composer's unique perspective on this program of fresh choral works. Meneely-Kyder is well-known in Connecticut and beyond for her oratorio Letter from Italy 1944, composed for and premiered by the GMChorale.

We hope to see you at what is sure to be a memorable concert!
