"Unexpectedly ethereal and luminous"

The Austrian composer Anton Bruckner may be best-known for his symphonies, eleven immense orchestral works that are vast in scale and dimension. But in his “day job” as an organist and choirmaster, he composed a wealth of exquisite sacred music for his choirs at Sankt Florian monastery (where he had been a choirboy in his youth) and at the cathedral at Linz. His ethereal Mass No. 2 in E minor, composed in 1866 to celebrate a new chapel in the Linz cathedral, is scored for eight-voice mixed choir and a small group of wind instruments. This Mass, widely acknowledged as among Bruckner’s best works, evokes the cathedralesque musical architecture of the Renaissance masters overlaid with the rich harmonies of the nineteenth century. The program also includes a selection of Bruckner's motets. Plan to arrive at 3:00pm to enjoy a pre-concert talk by Neely Bruce.

"The most beautiful choral singing I've ever heard... It was just glorious."
Alchemy, the vocal chamber ensemble of the GMChorale, offers a series of concerts across the state that often feature collaborations with local ensembles and performers. Now in its third season, and led by founding director Joseph D’Eugenio, this 24-voice ensemble brings a touch of gold to interpretations of Romantic and contemporary choral music. This season’s concerts, called Come to the Music, features a cappella and accompanied choral music by Schumann, Brahms, Bruckner, Duruflé, Fauré, Siegfried, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Thompson, Vierne, and Clausen. No tickets are required for these concerts; a free will donation will be accepted.

Meet Melissa Rooklidge

the GMChorale's Assistant Conductor
and Director of Operations

If you were in the audience for the GMChorale's "Dream with Me" concert on November 11, you saw Assistant Conductor Melissa Rooklidge beautifully conduct the GMChorale in Leonard Bernstein's lively "Gloria Tibi." Working closely with Artistic Director Joseph D'Eugenio, Melissa leads sectional rehearsals, serves as an extra set of "ears" for Maestro D'Eugenio, and collaborates with other aspects of artistic leadership for the GMChorale.
In addition, Melissa has recently been appointed as the GMChorale's Director of Operations, providing  administrative support to Maestro D'Eugenio behind the scenes, and working with staff and volunteers to support the members of the GMChorale in many ways, such as making sure that everyone has music and a place to sit and stand, managing "back stage" on concert days, and much more. Read more about Melissa below, and at our next concert, find her to say hello!

Melissa Rooklidge serves as the Assistant Conductor and Director of Operations for the GMChorale and also sings with Alchemy, the vocal chamber ensemble of the GMChorale. In Ithaca, New York, she is on faculty at the music school Opus Ithaca. At Opus, she founded and directs Odyssey, a community choir of adults and youth, and teaches Kodály musicianship courses. Ms. Rooklidge also served as the founding artistic director of the Waterbury Youth Chorus from 2011-2016. She additionally worked as the Yale Camerata chorus manager and concert production assistant at Yale University from 2012-2015. Across Connecticut and New York State, she has taught choirs, music, and voice in public and private schools since 2011. As a visiting music instructor, Ms. Rooklidge also had the privilege of teaching in her second language of Italian at Il Dovaldo Ridolfi elementary school in Tuscania, Italy, in 2010. She studied conducting with Drs. André Thomas and Kevin Fenton, having earned a Master of Music Education degree from Florida State University. She also holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree with a concentration in voice from Texas Tech University, mentored by acclaimed Kodály expert Dr. Susan Brumfield.
