When a business joins the Chamber, they help to make their community and their business healthy and prosperous. We are much stronger if we stand together - working together works.

Business of the Month features Coast Mountain Sports

Our next #LookInside feature shares the story of a family business committed to community and business growth. Culture, charity and all things local are common themes we hear, learn and appreciate. In fact, it was this local business who started the annual day we all know and love; Yukoner Appreciation Day!

It’s true Coast Mountain Sports Yukon is in fact a local business, a small business. What started as small vision, ultimately grew to the store we all love and adore today. Mistaken often as a “big box store”, this business is hardly that.

“Believe it or not, Coast Mountain Sports had its roots in 1944 when Craig’s Dad opened the first Hougen’s store with the slogan “Where your dollar has more cents.” Craig’s father grew the 250 sq ft shop to a large store with many different departments.” Owner MJ Warshawsk shares.

We learned there was a vision, a strategic one in fact. Craig Hougen and his brother Kelly got involved with the business and bought the sporting goods department in the 80’s. Craig ultimately took full ownership and expanded this Yukon business in Vancouver. Seeing the need for Southern pricing in the North, Craig bought the Coast Mountain Sports stores and opened one here in the 90’s. “At the same time, our other stores were growing”, shares MJ. “The running shoe, fitness and team business then became Sports Experts, and the hunting and fishing business became Hougen’s Sports Lodge.” Click here to read more.

Look Inside "Buy Local - Look Inside is a campaign supported by the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce and dedicated to supporting local business in our community. We post two business profiles each month by interviewing local entrepreneurs and businesses who are Whitehorse Chamber members and have requested to be featured. These profiles are created and written by a local contractor.

We encourage all businesses to e-mail: Avery Brohman at or message the Look Inside Facebook page to be featured. Thanks, and we look forward to profiling your business!"
Urban Visitor Signage Summer Blitz

The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce that from now until the end of August, we are hosting a Summer Sign Blitz.

The Urban Visitor Signage (UVS) is a project that was spearheaded in 2006 by the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Government of Yukon – Department of Highways and Public Works.  The goal of this program is to share information about Yukon businesses and services with visitors traveling through and within Whitehorse city limits.

The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce installs and maintains highway signs in both directions and currently has openings available for applications for the UVS Program in the categories of Gas, Food, Lodging, Services and Attractions. We will work with your business to ensure that proposed signs conform with the policy directives regarding size, lettering and colour.
Let’s get those empty Urban Visitor Sign Program frames filled up - and let’s show visitors and Yukoners’ alike what our amazing business community has to offer!

Interested in hosting a Business After Hours?

Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce signature Business After Hours (BAH) Events provide an opportunity for Chamber members to showcase their businesses and to share their products or services at their place of business, or at a venue of their choice. Creativity can be introduced into BAH events, with smaller or similar types of businesses co-hosting or using a theme, delivering a presentation or a demonstration - limited only by your imagination!

Business After Hours
These events are generally held on a Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm, twice per month, except during the summer months of July and August. A Business After Hours event maximizes networking opportunities and the development of new business contacts by extending an open invitation to the business community to be sure to show up with plenty of business cards!

We encourage all business people and residents alike of Whitehorse and of the Yukon to support their local business community by attending Business After Hours events. These events conveniently fit into your busy schedule and provide a perfect opportunity to build new business relationships and to strengthen established ones. Plus, as an added bonus, business card draws give guests the chance to win great prizes!
