Therme Group™ furthers its partnership with the fair by co-hosting the Talks program and commissioning famed architect Francis Kéré
to design the Talks Theater
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Miami, FL, November 28, 2018 —Therme Group™, the technology-driven health and wellness company, will co-host Design Miami/’s 2018 Talks program on December 6 through its initiative, Therme Art Program. For this occasion, Therme has commissioned famed architect Francis Kéré to design the Talks Theater inside the Design Miami/ fair.
As the co-host of this year’s program, Therme Group™ will present Therme Forum—a series of conversations focused on Therme-related discussion topics, such as incorporating body-focused design, art, and architecture into future city planning, as well as social inclusion and adaptation of human behavior through designed environments.
The cultural partners have co-curated three talks, bringing together twenty panelists that actively influence the art and design field’s discourse and production.
The first discussion on December 6 at 3 pm will focus on sustainability and social systems. The concept of social sculpture and how it can be applied outside the context of contemporary art will be examined within current shifting economies that are no longer based on ownership but on participation and experience. The conversation will bring together perspectives in art and architecture from artist-duo The Haas Brothers and architect Francis Kéré, as well as critical insights from Cyrill Gutsch, Founder of Parley, who will discuss redesigning alternative material supply chains, Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, Founding Partner of FuturePace gallery, which is pioneering new approaches in public art commissions, and Ik Lab 's Claudia Paetzold, responsible for the art program that is co-creating the unique Azulik Resort experience in Tulum.
The Founder and Architect of Azulik and the brand new uh may arts complex, Roth (Eduardo Neira), will participate in the next forum starting at 4 pm, about creating free space and curating free time. Artist duo Studio Drift,Marc Glimcher of Pace Gallery, Therme Group™ Founder and CEO Robert Hanea, Simon and Michaela de Pury, and art collective Studio Swine will also join the conversation and discuss how art and design can help create new models of business and city planning that reconsider our understanding of work and leisure and respond to a society no longer based mainly on human labor, but more so on spare time and interconnectivity between ourselves and our natural environment.
The final talk at 5 pm will explore the basis of enhanced connectivity with our own bodies, the social concept of self-perception and the possibilities of reprogramming social constructions. The conversation will be led by Hans Ulrich Obrist and joined by fashion designers Virgil Abloh and Grace Wales Bonner, artists Torkwase Dyson and Arthur Jafa, and architect Francis Kéré.
The Therme Forum talks are curated by Mikolaj Sekutowicz, Partner of Therme Group™ and Curator of Therme Art Program, and co-hosted with Sara Faraj, Secretary of the Therme Art Program Advisory Board.
A reception will be held at 7 pm to conclude the program and celebrate Francis Kéré's design for the Talks Theater, commissioned by Therme Group™.
Kéré’s design, titled Tugunora, will provide the ideal environment for this year’s Talks program, blending inspiration from the ancient Greek agora, a public space for assembly and discussion, and the Burkinabè tuguna, the traditional gathering space in West African villages, where the elders come together to confer regarding important matters of the community. While the agora is an open space, the tuguna is often built from a round log structure which carries a roof of woven leaves. Kéré integrated both characteristics in the Talks Theater, which is designed as a landscape that consists of several modular, wooden seating elements of different heights, surrounding the speaker’s podium which is covered by a canopy of lamps. Combining the elders’ practice with the public assembly aspect of the agora, the Talks Theater is supposed to be an inviting place of exchange and of dialogue, a place that generates knowledge and fosters the current discourse on design.
In addition to Therme Forum, Therme Group™ will be hosting VIP programming in partnership with Design Miami/.
Admission to the Therme Forum and Reception are open to the public with a Design Miami/ pass. Access to the VIP program is limited and by invitation-only.
