Following similar moves by Scotland and Wales, England is banning single-use items like plastic cutlery, plates and polystyrene trays. According to the government, more than 1 billion single-use plates and 4 billion pieces of plastic cutlery are used in England every year. Only 10% of that gets recycled.

Across the Channel, environmental groups ClientEarth, Surfrider Foundation Europe and Zero Waste France are suing French food giant Danone for failing to reduce single-use plastic in its products. Increasingly, advocacy groups are suing companies whose practices don’t live up to their environmental promises.

Sign this petition. It calls on companies to reject single-use plastics, and on governments to adopt a Global Plastic Treaty. And, of course, avoid plastic items destined for disposal.
