Monday was World Plant Milk Day. Robbie Lockie, co-founder of Plant Based News, created World Plant Milk Day to encourage people to make the switch from dairy milk to non-dairy alternatives. Why? A glass of dairy milk produces almost three times more greenhouse gas than plant-based milk, requires about nine times more land, and uses much more water.

From oat to soy, rice to nut, there are lots of plant milks to choose from. Our friends at Carbon Almanac have produced a handy chart showing the environmental impact of some, and this research published in The Conversation goes into detail on several different varieties. TL;DR: all plant-based milks are significantly better for the environment than dairy milk.

Choose plant-based milk. And if they don’t offer it at your local shop, cafe, school or workplace, ask for it. It’s getting easier to try plant-based cheese, yoghurt, butter and ice cream too.

🐮 It’s not just the environment that suffers. The dairy industry is cruel to cows too. After being forcibly impregnated every year, dairy cows experience trauma when their calves are taken away from them so that we can use their milk in our lattes and cereal.
