Dear Ward 3 residents,

I wish you a happy Fourth of July this weekend! Although we cannot gather for the traditionally parade -- one of my favorite Takoma Park community activities -- I encourage you to take part in the house-decorating activity and other events this weekend, maintaining COVID precautions as you do. I hope we'll be back to having a parade again next year!

Tonight, the City Council has a regular public meeting held virtually. The agenda is below. This agenda is short, with the focus being on honoring City Manager Suzanne Ludlow on her last day in this position.

Incoming City Manager Jamal Fox has been visiting the city this past week and will return in early August. During July, Deputy City Manager Jessica Clarke will be serving as Acting City Manager.

Sincerely,

COVID-19 Updates
The Takoma Park COVID-19 Data Dashboard has been updated with data through June 24, 2021:
  • There were no new cases of COVID-19 reported in the city in the last week, leaving the city's total cases since the start of the pandemic at 1,726. While this is undoubtedly great news, unvaccinated residents are encouraged to get vaccinated and exercise caution as the more-contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to circulate in the US and internationally.
  • 254 more residents became fully-vaccinated and 274 more residents received at least-one dose in the last week, bringing the city's total fully-vaccinated residents to 11,876 and partially-vaccinated residents to 13,757.
  • With 67.2% of residents fully-vaccinated and 77.8% of residents at least partially-vaccinated, the city has surpassed President Biden's goal of 70% vaccination (partial or fully) by July 4. The state of Maryland currently lags behind this goal, with 60% of residents at least partially-vaccinated and 54% fully-vaccinated.
ZTA 19-07 - Telecommunications Towers
The City Council has sent a letter to the Montgomery County Council opposing the passage of Zoning Text Amendment 19-07 (Telecommunications Towers – Limited Use) as currently drafted.

“The City of Takoma Park wants every resident of Montgomery County to have equitable access to affordable broadband internet. However, everyone should have a voice in the planning process. This ZTA, as currently drafted, would cut municipalities and residents out of the planning and siting process for many new “small” cell towers and strip us of our voices.”

Transportation Planning Board -- Share Your Views!
The Transportation Planning Board recently voted to remove the MDOT 270 project from consideration for this portion of the long-range transportation plan (the air quality conformity analysis, which is required for the set of projects that are adopted in the plan to be voted on next year). I strongly supported the removal of the project and continue to support this direction.  I encourage you to share your views with the full TPB on this or other issues by sending an email to TPBcomment@mwcog.org or fill out the form at: https://www.mwcog.org/tpbcomment/.
