Veteran LED: Transforming the Way You Think About Energy

How a Midlothian School Will Bank $100,000 in Five Years

[And Have More to Spend on Students]

Lights failed. Buzzy fluorescents annoyed. Metal halides in the gym took forever to warm up and strained the utility bills. And for better safety, Millwood School in Midlothian, Virginia, needed brighter and more reliable outdoor fixtures.

But a complete campus upgrade to LED seemed out of reach. “I don’t have $80,000 to spend on lights in one year,” Head of School Chris Ryan says. But then he connected with Chris Rawlings of Veteran LED.

Millwood discovered that it could cut its monthly energy bills, freeing up cash. On top of that, Veteran LED financed the project and helped find an $18,000 rebate from Dominion Energy. Millwood was cash flow positive in month one.

How did things turn out? Watch the story of how it all came together — and how Millwood is poised to save $100,000 over the next five years.

RVA Environmental Film Fest

More than 20 movies featuring environmental themes will be shown across Richmond next week — with free admission — during the ninth annual RVA Environmental Film Fest. Style Weekly has a feature on the festival, and you can get the complete schedule of movies, like “Run Wild Run Free: 50 Years of Wild and Scenic Rivers,” pictured, on the festival website.

3 Power Moves
  1. HAMSTER WHEELS: As seen in Vegas: “SportsArt, a 42-year-old Taiwanese athletic equipment maker, is ... selling exercise treadmills, ellipticals and cycles that turn workouts into electricity, feeding it back into the building through an electrical socket.” (Bloomberg)
  2. BUILDINGS WITH A BRAIN: The smart building trend is exploding, and LED lighting is a crucial element: “Flipping the switch to LED lighting is no longer simply about optimizing energy use: When combined with sensors, controls and networks, buildings become smart — gaining even greater efficiencies.” (Current Powered by GE)
  3. SLEEPING GIANT: The UK may be struggling with Brexit, but it’s been seeing a big payoff from energy efficiency. While renewable energy gets splashy headlines, energy efficient measures like LED lighting are making a huge impact — without people having to make sacrifices: “They are still able to have the energy services that they want.” (BBC News)
