Stephen Senn: Scale Fail

The rapid development of vaccines for COVID19 has been an impressive achievement. However, some think that the vaccines are not particularly effective, because the number needed to vaccinate is very high but there is a trick behind the numbers that Stephen Senn reveals in the following blog.

L'Eduard ja és doctor!

Fa tot just una setmana que l'Eduard Molins va fer la seva defensa de tesi titualda Proposing some innovative study design features to regulatory agencies (EMA and FDA) in bioequivalence trials. Reference Scaled Average Bioequivalence, and Two-Stage Adaptive Design. Moltes felicitats per aquesta fita! Si voleu saber una mica més podeu mirar aquest fil de Twitter on el propi Eduard l'explica en uns pocs Tweets.

Nou article publicat al GRBIO!

En Daniel Fernández i Marta Nai han publicat l'article Dynamics of HDI Index: Temporal Dependence Based on D-vine Copulas Model for Three-Way Data a la revista Social Indicators Research. Aquest treball té com a objectiu avaluar l’evolució al llarg del temps de la relació de dependència entre els índexs que conformen l'Índex de Desenvolupament Humà (HDI) mitjançant un mètode de còpules D-vine. Moltes felicitats!!!

Methodology
over metrics

The Journal of Clinical Epidemiology has published the article Methodology over metrics: Current scientific standards are a disservice to patients and society.

The main ideas of the article are the following:
- The overall quality of medical research remains poor.
- The scientific enterprise is business-like and consistently undervalues its own backbone methodology.
- Despite great initiatives to improve research quality, progress is modest.
- Top-down action is needed to break the cycle. These actions should give methodology a central place in funding acquisition as well as study design, conduct, and reporting.

What AI Still
Can’t Do

Modern artificial intelligence is capable of wonders, but yet today’s AI still has fundamental limitations. Relative to what we would expect from a truly intelligent agen AI has a long way to go.

Today, mainstream artificial intelligence still can’t:
- Use "common sense".
- Learn continuously and adapt on the fly.
- Understand cause and effect.
- Reason ethically.

As the real-world dangers of poorly designed AI become more prominent building artificial intelligence that can reason ethically is becoming an increasingly important priority for AI researchers and the broader public
