Three sets of Scholars will be roommates at their colleges of enrollment this fall.
  • University of Kansas - Laichia Vang (Sumner) and Jennifer Her (Sumner)
  • University of Central Missouri - Noah Bruce (Park Hill) and Eli Philips (Park Hill)
  • University of Missouri (MU) - Lovie Buie (Early College Academy) and Adorable Hemphill (Early College Academy). Adorable is also the recipient of the Preservation of Affordable Housing Named Scholarship.

Pictured above are Lovie Buie and Adorable Hemphill on the MU campus. KC Scholars interviewed them about being KC Scholars and roommates at the same college.

What does being a KC Scholar mean to you?

Adorable: KC Scholars means I am capable of anything I put my mind to because not only am I a Scholar but I’m determined to stand out and be chosen.

Lovie: KC Scholars means that I am one of many students who were blessed! I feel very lucky and grateful for KC Scholars.

What helped you make the decision to attend MU?

Adorable: I chose Mizzou honestly because my financial needs were met, they have my majors, the campus is beautiful, and Lovie is going!

Lovie: I’ve always heard of MU being an amazing school with lots of great programs and fun student living.

How did you become a roommate with another KC Scholar?

Adorable: I’ve known Lovie since 8th grade and we have been friends ever since. We went to high school and the Early College Program together. When KC Scholars came out we both applied. The day the list for the winners went out, I got an email while I was dropping Lovie off at home. I was so happy and telling her that I got It. She hadn’t gotten an email yet and we were both sad; then 30 minutes later she called me so excited telling me how she got it and I was more excited for her then she was. We juggled with colleges and our decisions. Lovie already had in her mind she was going to Mizzou but I wasn’t accepted yet. Lovie waited a few weeks before decision day to put in her housing just so I could be her roommate!

Lovie: As soon as Adorable and I found out that we would both be attending MU, we automatically decided that we would be roommates. We’ve been friends for so long and thought that it would make our transition much easier.

What is great about rooming with another KC Scholar?

Adorable: We come from similar backgrounds. We both have a story that is worth being told. Also, we help each other stay on top of KC Scholars’ deadlines.

Lovie: We can relate with each other a lot academically and whenever we have questions about the scholarship we can always go to the other.

KC Scholars Exceeds Early-Years Fundraising Goal

KC Scholars aimed to engage a respected group of community leaders with a passion for the program’s mission – to create a life-changing difference for thousands of low- and modest-income Kansas Citians by increasing opportunities to attain a college degree.

“We thank our inaugural donors for their generosity and belief in the mission of KC Scholars,” said Beth Tankersley-Bankhead, president and executive director of KC Scholars. “Because of the support of inaugural donors, we were able to exceed our first two years fundraising goal by raising $1,589,520 and to impact the lives of more than 1,500 Kansas Citians.”

Because of the generosity of Inaugural Donors, KC Scholars awarded 919 scholarships on May 1, 2018, up from 635 scholarships awarded in year one. 100% of external funds raised go to scholarship support, allowing KC Scholars to provide more scholarships every year.
