KC Scholars Recognized as a Regional Leader

Mid-America Regional Council’s Board of Directors has selected KC Scholars as a recipient for their 2018 Regional Leadership Award to recognize our efforts in helping area residents earn postsecondary credentials that meet workforce demand and strengthen the regional economy.

KC Scholars Hosts Ongoing College Planning Activities
In March, KC Scholars hosted a College Fair for 2018 Adult Learner Scholarship applicants and current 2017 College Savings Account/Match awardees (10th graders and their families). Students, parents, and adult learner applicants attended the fair and had the opportunity to connect with campus representatives from the 17 institutions in the KC Scholars Postsecondary Network.

Adult Learners Make the Dean’s List
13 KC Scholars adult learner scholarship recipients made the college Dean’s List in fall 2017. Among dean’s list honorees were scholarship recipients mother and son, Alex and Yolanda Young (left and center).

Adult Learner College Graduates
Two adult learners graduated with their associate’s degree in December 2017. KC Scholars expects three more graduates in May: two bachelor’s degree earners and one associate’s degree earner.

30 Years of Innovation Continues to Carry Out Mr. K's Promise
On April 7, 1988, 240 eighth grade students and their teachers gathered in the auditorium of Westport High School to hear Ewing Kauffman, one of their school's most famous alumni.

Community Volunteers Serve as Scholarship Reviewers
Community involvement is an underlying philosophy of KC Scholars. This year, we have 185 community members, from all sectors across the 6-county region, serving as reviewers. They range from under 30 to over 70 years of age and 48% were the first in their family to complete college. Organizations with the highest number of reviewers include: Lockton, Mariner Holdings, Mid-Continent Public Library, Cerner, and the Kansas City Public Library. We thank these community volunteers who believe in the potential and success of all our KC Scholars!

KC Scholars adds new position to focus on marketing, outreach, and “telling the story of KC Scholars”. Check to learn more about the position opening.

Casey Tan
Liberty High School

My name is Casey Tan. I’m a senior at Liberty High School and am extremely proud and excited to be a first-ever KC Scholar! KC Scholars is an amazing organization that inspires and motivates me every day. Receiving this scholarship has helped me pursue a variety of higher education opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise.

I want to thank the wonderful Kansas City community, the KC Scholars donors, and the college advising group! All of your hard work and generosity has not gone unnoticed, and I offer my deepest appreciation to all those who have contributed to this life-changing program.

Being a KC Scholar means opportunity! KC Scholars has not only opened many doors for me, but also gave me the confidence to believe in myself and my own abilities. I am very grateful for the guidance from the College Advising team and the support from the KC Scholars community.
