On May 1st, KC Scholars awarded 919 Kansas Citians with scholarships to further their
education. Awardees included: 344 Traditional Scholarships to 11th Graders, 137 Adult Learner Scholarships, and 438 College Savings Accounts for 9th Graders - 70 of them in the Match and Incentive Program.

Ceremonies were held at:
  • Van Horn High School in Jackson County
  • University Academy in Jackson County
  • Olathe North High School in Johnson County
  • Park Hill High School in Platte County
  • Winnetonka High School in Clay County
  • Pleasant Hill High School in Cass County

To add to the fun, Sluggerrr and KC Wolf were on-hand at some schools to help us celebrate our Awardees!

The Smart Money: KC Scholars Awards to Promising Area Students

Tuesday brought the promise of a life-changing day for hundreds of high school students and adult students across the Kansas City metro area, including dozens from Eastern Jackson County schools.

Starting with a morning ceremony at Van Horn High School, representatives from KC Scholars surprised several scholarship winners around the region, arranging for families to be present when the winners walked into the room for short ceremonies.

Introducing Anita Underwood as Newest KC Scholars Staff Member

Anita is a native of Kansas City, Kansas and a graduate of Sumner Academy in the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools. Anita earned a B.A. in Fine Arts from Kansas State University and a M.A. in African American Studies from the University of Kansas. After college, Anita was a substitute teacher in the KCK School District and has worked the past two years as a JAG-K Specialist (Jobs for America’s Graduates- Kansas), where she taught and mentored at-risk high school students in life and career skills which included their exploration of and preparation for postsecondary education. While in college, Anita was a graduate assistant in the African American Experience Department at KU’s Spencer’s Research Library and a leader in the Black Student Union, received the K-State Dean of Student Life Outstanding Senior Award, and received the K-State Alumni Association Senior Multicultural Leadership Award at Kansas State University. Anita is also an active leader locally in her church and in her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
  • 42% increase in applications this year, compared to 2017
  • 44% increase in scholarships awarded this year, compared to 2017
  • Scholars are from 81 high schools and 5 are homeschooled
  • 73% of awardees are first-generation college goers
  • 73% of awardees are individuals of color
  • Average ACT score of 11th graders is 22.7 – higher than MO and KS
  • Awardees ranged from 13 to 68 years of age
KC Scholars is a Kansas City Metro college scholarship and student support program that will increase college-going and completion by low-and modest-income individuals in a six-county Metro area. KC Scholars will infuse our local economy and workforce with over 8,000 college graduates by 2027.
