KC Scholars congratulates 5 Adult Learners for completing their college degrees in May 2018. Two others graduated in December 2017. Pictured left to right are: Angenetta Smith, Terri Fletcher, Andromeda Mason, and LaJuanna Anderson, Cedric Deadmon of KC Degrees, and Camry Ivory of KC Scholars.
LaJuanna Anderson, a first-generation college student, earned an associate’s degree
from MCC-Longview and will enroll at Western Governor’s University to pursue a bachelor’s in business. She is a full-time dispatcher with the Kansas City Police Department.
“Earning this degree is one of the most important things in my life. I plan on leaving a legacy for my family and becoming a positive influence in the community.“
Terri Fletcher, first-generation college student, earned an associate’s degree from MCC–Penn Valley and will enroll at Western Governor’s University to pursue a bachelor’s in education.
“With KC Scholars’ assistance, nothing could stop me from continuing my education and obtaining my degree and attaining my goal of being the first in my family to have a bachelor’s degree.”
Andromeda Mason, a first-generation college student, completed a bachelor’s degree in history from UMKC.
“I want to obtain my degree to set an example for my children and to make myself more appealing in the job market.”
Alexa McClellan, a first-generation college student, earned an associate’s degree from MCC-Longview and will enroll at Avila University in Fall 2018 to pursue a bachelor’s in business administration.
“Completing my degree is my number one priority, as it is essential for me to have it so that I can achieve my goals after graduation. I want my life’s work to center around helping women tap into their dreams and passions and learn how to turn them into profitable businesses.”
Angenetta Smith, a first-generation college student, earned an associate’s degree from KCKCC and will enroll at Park University in Fall 2018 to pursue a bachelor’s in human resources with a minor in visual communications. She works part-time as a bus driver with USD 500 and is the mother of a KC Scholars 2017 College Savings Account recipient.
"By achieving my degree, KC Scholars is helping me give back to my community. My goal is to educate children ... so they can govern this world and meet their full potential."

KC Scholars Hosts Panel Focused on Career Opportunities in Kansas City

On June 2, KC Scholars hosted a session at Adult Learner Orientation for scholarship recipients selected in 2018. The panel focused on career opportunities in KC, with these corporate sector volunteers presenting: • Jayson Cuba, Assistant VP, Willis Towers Watson

Jonisha Holman: 2018 Adult Learner Scholarship Recipient

Jonisha Holman is a first-generation college student, a graduate of Lincoln Prep Academy, and works as a full-time receptionist at the Kansas Institute of Medicine. She will attend MCC-Penn Valley to complete her A.A. degree.

“I fully understand the demands of a full-time mother and a full-time student and I am prepared to take on the challenge. I will let nothing get in the way of me earning my degree and showing my children that education is key.”

Research demonstrates that children of college-educated parents are 90% more likely to also earn a college degree.
