Introducing
Nathan's Take
A viewpoint from the BCDP President

I hope everyone has had a Happy Pride month!

I hung a Pride flag outside of my house in downtown Maryville, which I debated about for weeks before doing so. I’m sure there have been folks who didn’t like it, but I have gotten nothing but affirmations for the LGBTQ+ community. Sometimes, in this area, it is hard to fly your flag when you’re in the minority.

Being a Democrat is also like that.

As we show up in our activism, folks often think that attending rallies and yelling into megaphones is the only way to protest. That is part of protestation, but so are the acts of defiance that aren’t Instagram moments. Placing a bumper sticker on your car, phonebanking, canvassing for candidates, and flying your flag are all defying the idea that there is no room for Democrats in Blount County.
As we head into July, I hope you all have a safe July 4th weekend.

Keep moving forward,
Nathan
