I
Dear fellow Democrats and allies,

We are in the homestretch of the 2021 campaign. The General Election is in just 20 days - Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

These odd-numbered year elections are so very important. We will be electing judges up and down the ballot - to the PA Supreme Court, to our statewide appellate, county, and local courts too. As we have come to know all too well, judges have become one of our most important elected positions, as they are often the ultimate backstop in preserving our democracy, our constitutional rights, and the progress we have made in our communities and country.

We will also be electing county and township officials who have a very local and immediate impact on our lives.  We have been featuring many of these Radnor Democratic candidates in our newsletters.  This edition features Radnor Democratic Township Commissioner candidate AnnaMarie Jones.  AnnaMarie is eager to attend to the needs of her Radnor Third Ward residents, and her intelligence, grace, reasonability, and dedication to the role ahead are just some of the necessary traits that will make her a fantastic commissioner.

I’d also like to return our attention to perhaps the most concerning race of all, the Radnor School Board election.  I must call out the unprecedented disinformation campaign being foisted upon our community by the Radnor Republicans and their "political advocacy group," Reimagine Radnor. Knowing that Donald Trump was deeply unpopular here, the Republican candidates and their supporters have been hiding from the "Republican” label since he was elected. Note that despite this being a political election, there is not one sign anywhere in Radnor Township urging people to "Vote Republican.”

Their deception and hypocrisy are striking and unconscionable. Their advocacy group refuses to be transparent about its leadership and identity, claiming to be "bi-partisan” or “non-partisan” while only supporting Republicans, deploying all the national Republican culture war talking points and tactics, and promoting themselves on all the Radnor Republican platforms. Their most clearly articulated mission is to eliminate Democrats and replace them with Republicans.  But perhaps the worst part is their funding and guidance. Their biggest donations come from outside PACs with Trump-inspired agendas and donors. And they are also being counseled by local and out of state political strategists who have careers dedicated to electing Trump-supporting Republicans. It is sad to see people believing the lie that this group and their Republican candidates are conducting a “non-partisan" or "bi-partisan" mission.  The priorities and vision of our incumbent candidates that helped make the Radnor School District #1 out of 500 school districts in Pennsylvania are NOT shared by these Republican candidates.

I was first elected as a Democratic committee person at age 20 in 1978, and in my over 40 years in politics, I have never experienced such outright lying by local Republican leadership and their supporters like we’re seeing now.  Please visit the Radnor Democrats for School Board website to see how rampant the lying is.  It is shameful, and anyone who thinks that lying is an acceptable qualification for any office, especially those who are stewards of our schools, let alone the kind of example to be setting for Radnor's children, should think twice. All of us as residents deserve better.

It is absolutely essential that we ALL work our networks to turn out all of our Democratic friends, neighbors and allies to vote.  We have come too far with the success of our schools and other leadership positions to go backwards.

How else can you help?

Please join us in working the polls on Election Day.  Use this sign-up genius link to pick your shifts. Once you sign up, our committee people will be in contact with you to assist. This is our last point of contact with voters before they enter the polls and you can make a difference.

ALSO,

Please stay tuned for the Radnor League of Women Voters Candidates' Forum coming up on Zoom this Sunday, October 17th. The Commissioners' forum will be held from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. and the School Board Forum will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. We will send out the zoom link as soon as it is available.

Lastly, please mark your calendar for our monthly Radnor Democrats meeting for next Wednesday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m. Watch our next newsletter for that zoom link too.

Democratically yours,
George Badey

RADNOR DEMOCRATS SPOTLIGHT ON:
3rd WARD CANDIDATE: AnnaMarie Jones

AnnaMarie Jones is the 2021 endorsed Democratic candidate to represent Ward 3 on the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners. She is running in the November 2nd special election, which will determine who will serve out the unfinished term of Damien Enderle, who resigned earlier this year. Cathy Agnew is currently serving as the interim Ward 3 Commissioner.

AnnaMarie is a mother, wife, community advocate, former sales and marketing executive, local TV independent producer, and creator of the Demystifying Diversity podcast. A member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), she is a graduate of Syracuse University, where she majored in Speech Communication and minored in Spanish. AnnaMarie is a Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church of Wayne vestry member, where she helped establish the Mainline Refugee Resettlement Organization, which provided four refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo a safe place to rebuild their lives. She feels blessed to now call friends these four fabulous, brave, beautiful, and thriving individuals.

Looking beyond oneself, and investing time in community and others, are values that were modeled for AnnaMarie by her late father, Ernest James George. Ernest was born into poverty and segregation during Jim Crow in New Orleans, Louisiana. However, as a light-skinned Black man, he beat the system and was the first in his family to attend college with the support of the GI Bill, paving the way for his brothers and sister to get an education, too. Ernest eventually became a successful small business owner and philanthropist in the community of Long Branch, New Jersey, where he did as much as he could to make it a better place for those who live there.

AnnaMarie currently serves as co-chair for Wayne Elementary School’s beloved Fall Book Fair as well as its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. AnnaMarie, her husband Chris, and their three children, Luca (14), Lorelei (11), and Kieran (8), enjoy living in Radnor’s 3rd Ward, where you will often see them walking their dog Genni, running errands on foot, riding bikes, playing basketball, and visiting with friends in the neighborhood.

As a Township Commissioner, AnnaMarie will focus on the following key issues:

  • Guarding against overdevelopment, such as the proposed 24/7 Wawa at the intersection of South Aberdeen and Lancaster Avenues;

  • Alleviating our stormwater crisis;

  • Installing pedestrian walkways to make certain roads in Ward 3 more safe;

  • Ensuring that our first responders are adequately funded, staffed, and equipped;

  • Maintaining our wonderful parks and trails and a healthy tree canopy; and

  • Promoting a culture of volunteerism as a way to bring our community together.

AnnaMarie looks forward to continuing her passion for service on the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners, but she needs your help. Her opponent is Baron Gemmer, a former Republican now running as an Independent. Please help AnnaMarie by donating to her campaign at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/annamariejonesforcommissioner2021 or signing up for a volunteer shift at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0948a4af2ea3f58-3rdward1.
