How to Spot and Report Elder Abuse
It is estimated that 1 in 10 Americans 60+ years old experience elder abuse or mistreatment yet only 1 in 24 cases are reported to authorities. Elder abuse or mistreatment can often be categorized into a few different types: physical, emotional, sexual, financial exploitation, and neglect. It is important to know the warning signs to help stop or prevent abuse from happening:
- Unexplained bruises or injury
- Reports of under-or over-medicating
- Caregiver refuses older adult to have visitors
- Torn, stained, or dirty clothing
- Unusual weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration
- Suspicious or sudden changes in wills or power of attorney
- Bills not being paid
If you are concerned that you or a loved one is experiencing abuse, mistreatment, or neglect, report it to Adult Protective Services at 1-855-444-3911. For more information on elder abuse and warning signs visit ProtectKentSeniors.org or call 616-456-5664.
