Aging is obviously something that everyone will experience. We all eventually will age and everyone ages a little differently, meaning the supports and resources someone might require while getting older could take on a variety of different forms. One of the common resources has been relying on nursing homes for care. However, the cost of nursing homes has always been high, and though many provide a wonderful community and personalized care, it is many people’s wish to remain living in their own homes. This is becoming more and more doable with programs like the MI Choice Medicaid Waiver, which offers in-home care that an individual would otherwise be receiving at a nursing facility.

Protect Yourself from COVID-19 Related Scams
There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s important to know where to go for accurate information to avoid being a victim of a scam. Here are some tips to stay safe:
  • Contact Tracing: the health department or government official may call to gather basic information from you but they will NOT ask for any personal information such as your social security number or payment information.
  • COVID testing: many scammers are advertising COVID testing kits online to gain your personal information. For accurate testing information visit Coronavirus - Coronavirus ( or call your local health department.
  • COVID vaccine: scammers may call to sell you hopes of an earlier spot in line to get the COVID vaccine. Remember: getting the COVID vaccine is FREE. Call your local health department or visit Coronavirus - COVID-19 Vaccine ( for the latest information and current phase of vaccine distribution.
  • If you’ve been a victim of a scam, call 2-1-1 or report it to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Team online or call 877-765-8388
If you'd like to learn more about scams and other elder abuse topics, you can request a virtual presentation from the Kent County Elder Abuse Coalition at or call 616-456-5664.
