Doncaster Opportunity Area Newsletter
January 2018 Edition

Welcome to the January edition of the Doncaster Opportunity Area Newsletter – Happy New Year.

Progress

Work has progressed significantly since the November edition of the Doncaster Opportunity Area Newsletter. On Friday 19th January we were delighted to publish the Doncaster Opportunity Area Delivery Plan, which sets out the activities that will take place over the course of the three year programme.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all partners involved in the development of this plan. The publication of the delivery plan is a huge milestone in the programme and is the culmination of many hours of hard work. It marks the start of the next exciting phase of work, taking forward the programme that we have set out in the plan so that we deliver real change for children and young people across the borough.

We have met with our working groups for each of the four emerging priorities regularly and they have started to shape the activities set to take place in year one.

Engaging Doncaster’s Children and Young People

Whilst we are working with specialists, we are also keen to work with the true experts – young people. Young people’s views remain at the heart of this programme and so we are in the process of recruiting Opportunity Area Ambassadors. We will be working with Ambassadors and EXPECT Youth partners to:

  • Promote Doncaster as a great place to live and work – working with a group of children and young people to develop their own marketing campaign for the borough that will be rolled out to schools.
  • Design and implement the programme of work to deliver our ambition that there are ‘no careers out of bounds’ for young people.
  • Establish an alumni of former Doncaster school students who have gone on to experience personal and career success, who can inspire future generations of young people in Doncaster to go as far as their dreams, ambitions and drive will take them.

Ministerial Visit

We were pleased to welcome the new Minister for Children and Families, Nadhim Zahawi to Doncaster on Thursday 18 January. Minister Zahawi visited Doncaster Children’s Service’s Trust to hear about some of the great work that they are doing in light of their Good Ofsted Inspection. The Minister then took part in a roundtable discussion at the Keepmoat Stadium, hearing from education professionals, apprentices and other experts about the work already underway in the Doncaster Opportunity Area.

We were thrilled to hear that the Minister went away feeling energised by the conversations and excited to hear more about the Doncaster Opportunity Area as we move into the delivery phase. Thanks to Jim Lord, Peter Norman and EXPECT Youth partners for setting this visit up so quickly and making it so successful.

What’s next

The DfE will continue to work closely with the Opportunity Area Partnership Board and local partners to develop detailed plans to further shape and implement the activities set out in the delivery plan, this will include agreeing how we allocate our year 1 funding. We’ll be able to include more information on this in the next our next newsletter.

In coming weeks, working groups will welcome Ambition School Leadership, TeachFirst and many other organisations to help them tailor the activities to ensure that activities set out have the best outcomes for Doncaster. Specifically, we will be working with secondary head teachers to tailor NPQ’s (National Professional Qualifications) to suit their teaching staff.

Opportunity for secondary schools

Speakers Trust is delivering free communications skills training in Doncaster for Year 10s, providing an expert public speaking trainer for a day-long workshop in your school between February and May. With a number of schools in the borough interested so far and a limited number of fully funded places available, act now to secure your spot.

As well as improving speaking, listening and feedback skills, the training teaches students how to speak with increased confidence in front of a group. The workshop is designed for a mixed ability group of 25 Year 10 students.

Following the workshop, each school will put a representative forward to compete in a regional final to celebrate the pupils' achievement. To avoid missing out on this opportunity, confirm your place today through the link below, or contact rob.lloyd-jones@speakerstrust.org or call 0207 922 7886 for more information.
