Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School

A Note from Mrs. Dent

Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School has set up a COVID-19 Task Force Team that is made up of medical professionals (Dr. John Wright, MD, Dr. Jeannine Griffin, MD, Michael Gaines, FNP-C and Linda Meyer, RN). This team is helping our school to set up standard operating procedures to safely educate our students on campus. The reason for this effort is that the American Academy of Pediatrics' guidance "strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.”  The guidance says that "schools are fundamental to child and adolescent development and well-being.”

With this approach in mind, our school is spending thousands of dollars and hundreds of man-hours to prepare for the coming school year. Teachers are already meeting to be trained on COVID protocols and develop classroom processes to meet them. We understand that parents are concerned about having their children return to school, but our teachers are fully in support of having the students back in the classroom. They know this cannot happen unless they gain your trust by implementing safe policies, following those protocols both in and out of the school environment, and communicating these protocols to families.

The OLG COVID Task Force has set up the following  special school COVID email link to answer questions and address concerns of parents and faculty as they arise, both now & in the coming months:

The OLG COVID Task Force team will meet again next week to review latest COVID policies & procedures and to discuss any questions sent in the coming week.  Our next Navigator issue will provide the results of this meeting.

These are unprecedented times, but we are so blessed to already have one of the key safety factors in place - smaller class sizes. And while we have had families approach our school to enroll because of our size and approach to this pandemic, we will be maintaining our smaller class sizes. During the current pandemic, we have decreased our lower elementary class sizes and have frozen enrollment for the coming year to focus on the safe return of those families that have been with us through the years and selected our school for not only its approach to student safety, but also our high academic standards and faith-based curriculum.

Thank you for choosing to be a part of our Mariner Family.

Preparing for the New School Year!

  • OLG will be an In-School Campus this year.
  • All classes will be in-person. Remote Learning will only be offered temporarily for the following situations:
    • Required COVID quarantines (for confirmed cases or cases being tested)
    • In response to a Government order

  • MASKS - OLG staff & students in grades K - 8th will wear masks when moving about the main building.  Students will have the option to wear royal blue or grey, 3-ply cloth masks (available through the school or other suppliers) or disposable non-cloth masks.  Designer & specialty masks will not be part of the dress code.  Please go to the school website ( for details and to place mask orders.  Please place mask orders on-line by July 25th to ensure your order is ready for pickup on August 7th.
  • SCHOOL SUPPLIES - Because access to the campus will be greatly restricted with the temporary COVID regulations, we are encouraging parents to pick up your student's remote lockers on Thursday, July 30th, put your student's school supplies in his/her remote locker, and then return the remote locker with school supplies to school on Friday, August 7th (and pick up your mask orders) - all via curb-side service!  The remote lockers will be waiting for the students' return in their homerooms on the first day of school, Tuesday August 11th.

  • UNIFORM SALES - Don't forget, we will be holding outdoor uniform sales on Tuesday, July 28th from 8 - 10am and 4:30 - 5:30pm.  $2/item or trade-ins welcome.
Face Masks

For safety, face masks will be required of everyone who enters the OLG campus. We have contracted with 361Printing to supply 3-ply OLG face masks and a mask holder, which will be available for purchase through the school (with or without logos). We bought in bulk to help families save money, but additional mask style options are available from to get the perfect fit. All cloth masks must be gray or royal blue (as pictured), or disposable non-cloth masks (like used in hospitals) may be worn.

Please go to for details and to place order.

Current Preparations

Teacher Meetings

Teachers started meeting a month early to work together to plan for the upcoming school year. The new face behind the white mask is Sr. Theresa Vu - Middle School Religion & Art Teacher!

Although there are many items to consider, the teachers are eager to get back into their classrooms with their students.

4th grade has a new teacher to go along with a new wall and plexiglass on the desks! We are happy to welcome Ms. Michelle Madsen to OLG.

Building Construction

COVID doesn't stop construction, and every summer we have building improvements. This year we are reworking a classroom for better security and to stop leaks.

We are also replacing the glass doors at the end of the main hallway to improve access control and security.

Water Fountains

Water fountains will be replaced with water bottle filling stations, and all students will bring their own water bottles. Additional hand washing stations for the hallway and playground are also on order.

Social distancing and Plexiglass between desks will help protect students.

This, of course, required materials and labor. Thanks to Grace Flooring & Glass who worked with us to get all the Plexiglass cut and delivered in record time. And a big thanks to all our volunteers, especially OLG graduates Erin D. (2016) who helped prep all the wood, and Trent D. (2017), who performed his Eagle Scout Project by helping the school install plexiglass on desks!

Accelerated Reader

We had a record number of students participate in our first AR Summer Testing session at St. Jude Hall last Thursday!  There are two more Thursday AR testing sessions - July 23rd and July 30th, from 11am - 1pm in St. Jude Hall.  Start earning those AR points for the coming year!

Having trouble finding books to read this summer?

Go to your child's AR account. It gives articles your child can read in his/her ZPD range.

AR also gives book recommendations in the student's reading range, and these books can be checked out from the Public Library. Go to the Calhoun County Library online (, and look in their card catalog for the name of a book. It will show if they have an ebook version. They have lots of books from which to choose.

If you find a different book through the public library ebook site and are not sure if the reading level is in the student's ZPD reading range, you can go to AR Book Find ( and get the reading level information on the book if it is not available through the library site.

Tuition Assistance Round 2

Tuition assistance for families with children in grades K5 - 8th is still available. The Tuition Assistance application can be picked up at the school office or found on the school website ( and downloaded. Completed applications (with 2019 tax return information included) should be filled out and faxed to 361.552.7485 or dropped off at the school office by July 23rd to be considered for the Round 2 application process, which will be processed prior to August 1st. Tuition assistance is given based on the 2020 Federal Poverty guidelines, which are also available on the school website.  Applications are processed in the order received.

Christ is the Source...

Let us work together to keep each other safe - social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands, and coming together to do what's best for our children and families. In the midst of all trials, let us choose love.

Prayer for Peace

May Christ banish from the souls of men and women
whatever might endanger peace.

May he transform all people
into witnesses of truth, justice and love.

May Christ illumine with his light
the minds of rulers, so that,
besides caring for the proper material
welfare of their peoples,
they may also guarantee them
the fairest gift of peace.

Finally, may Christ inflame the desires of all people
to break through the barriers which divide them,
to strengthen the bonds of mutual love,
to learn to understand one another,
and to pardon those who have done them wrong.

Through Christ’s power and inspiration
may all people welcome each other
to their hearts as brothers and sisters,
and may the peace they long for
ever flower and ever reign among them.

School Advisory Council

We are most grateful for the SAC members, who normally meet monthly to ensure that we can continue to provide a faith-based education to every child whose family so desires. During this time of preparation, the SAC is meeting more often to help guide the school for the upcoming school year.
We want to take this opportunity to thank our donors.

Your generosity makes it possible for our school to provide a loving and productive environment in which students can grow in the Light of Christ.
