Key to the Future
We received the Term Two reports and are delighted to be able to share that the girls are working hard and it shows. Everyone did well and in addition, their overall marks are improving beautifully. We are so proud of them for doing their very best and working towards their bright futures.
Singing in the showers!
Renovating the two bathrooms in Cyrildene has been on our ‘must-do’ list from the very beginning, so it was wonderful when Duma and Brian from Ras Plumbers arrived on 18th
July to tackle this important work. They removed the baths and put in a total of five showers – far more useful for our large household – and also put in vanity and basin units into each of the two bathrooms. They did a great job.
Super special thanks to Verity Maude who drove this project forward. Verity, you make a huge difference in our lives and we salute your spirit of adventure and for forging ahead with the belief that the money ‘will follow’. It was very much a team effort and we want to express our deep gratitude to Linda Botes of Super Union, the Thurlow family, Carmel & Dave and Nallie from Union Tiles whose contributions and assistance made it possible.
Happy Birthday Madiba
As part of the annual international celebration in honour of Nelson Mandela
, the Mandela Foundation hosted a special event. Some of our girls were invited to join in the fun. They were treated to lawn games, lunch and a beautiful birthday cake for Madiba.
Thank you Liesl Lodewyk and those who helped to give the girls such a great adventure on July 20th
. While many may travel on Johannesburg’s state-of-the-art Gautrain regularly, for the girls it was a whole new experience. It was a thrilling day out. Their train journey was followed by lunch in the Holiday Inn. Tanele says, “it was an amazing experience that I will never forget”.
Lindsay Sherman and her team from
Investec generously hosted a celebratory bash for our June to August birthday girls. What a lovely party! Not only did each ‘birthday princess’ receive a gift but all the other children received party packs too. Of course, no Home of Hope celebration feels complete without traditional song and dance from our girls; they are getting better and better at both. "As we ate cake and laughed together there was real sense of just how far we have come over the years."
Ready, set, GO!
Smollan is a leading retail solutions company underpinned by a deep purpose to improve society through the creation of large-scale, meaningful employment. From 15th
July, Smollan presented their Work Readiness Workshop and five of our girls attended it. They were instructed in important subjects such as consultative training, administrative work, presentation, CV and interview skills. Zandile says,
‘I enjoyed every minute of the course and learnt so much about work readiness. I am grateful for the privilege to have been able to attend this workshop. Thank you, Smollan.’
Message from Mam Khanyi
As the exams approach and pressure rises, particularly for the older girls, we remind them that there is little that cannot be accomplished when we have the right attitude. We know this from experience. Somehow, we keep going strong against the odds because we pull together as a team. You are part of that team and we never take that for granted. For your interest in us and for all that you do, in any little way, that helps to keep us moving forward, thank you.
