December 2022 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

We are preparing for Back-to-School 2023 and always welcome support with uniforms, school bags, registration and tertiary fees.

Flowers bring such joy and beauty. They produce oxygen, and medicine. Flowers are responsible for the functionality of the world we live in. Similarly, Home of Hope for Girls has become flowers to many that have been here, and who are currently here. The children begin as seeds, nurtured slowly and attentively to grow into the flowers they are today.

Home of Hope for Girls has not only been a Home or a place to lay your head, but a place you receive all your nutrients: love, care, health, hope and education. We are so grateful to be in a position to help, and it is such a joy to receive feedback like this from our girls:

Red roses are universally understood to be love
“I'm now doing Legal Studies at Varsity College. Home of Hope for Girls has done a lot for me; I don't even know where to begin. If it wasn't for Home of Hope I wouldn't be where I am today and I'm thankful to God for giving me someone like Mam Khanyi.
I was able to finish my Matric and I was also lucky to go on to tertiary education, and for that I am thankful to God, Mam Khanyi and to Home of Hope. I am now in a process of doing something good for myself. I love Mam Khanyi with all my heart, and live through what Ma says, ‘A girl’s background does not define her future.’" Z.N

White roses symbolize loyalty, purity, and innocence.
“Thank you Mam Khanyi for taking me in when I had nowhere to go. You have been nothing but a mother to me, always extending yourself in ways that only a caring and loving mother does. Being at Home of Hope has taught me to be a dreamer, to always look up at the skies and not down at my feet.
Being at Home of Hope has also taught me that there is hope for young people like me; my choices determine my future, not my background. Before I arrived at Home of Hope all I had was a dream, but I did not know how that dream would come true. Thank you for being part of my journey, but most importantly, thank you for walking my educational journey with me, it has made every burden lighter.
I completed my teaching degree in 2022 and have graduated to become a fully-fledged teacher and this wouldn’t have been possible without your assistance and guidance, and for that I am eternally grateful.  I hope that one day I will be able to extend the same kindness to others and assist them to make their dreams come true as you did mine.
May the Almighty shower you with more blessings, with long life and may He grant you all the desires of your heart. Thank you once again.” N.M.

The protea is one tough floral species and is known to adapt
“I am studying a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at Monash, South Africa, and I am aspired to be an Accountant someday, as I love numbers (and music). I joined the Home of Hope family in 2008, hence this is my 15th year with Home of Hope.

What is Home of Hope to me?
This is not a difficult question to answer, Home of Hope is a fortress that is full of love and care for anyone who needs to be loved and cared for. It is a place that renews hope for those who have lost it. I was raised at Home of Hope, and some of the things I’ve learned are, self-respect, how to be responsible for myself as girl, and how to live with a large group of people by appreciating all their differences and similarities. I was also taught that there is nothing I cannot do, regardless of my circumstances. In simple terms, my background does not determine my future.

How has Home of Hope helped?
Home of Hope gave me a second chance to try again in life when nobody else did, and I am forever grateful for that. Home of Hope gave me education and an opportunity to make my future bright and lastly, it gave me a place to call a home. When I think of all this, tears run down my cheeks - it is such a great privilege to have a place to confidently call a home, and people to call a family. Home of Hope is my only home and family that I know of, therefore, they are very special to me.

My Special thanks to Mom
Mom Khanyi brought light into my life when I was hopelessly fumbling in the dark and she wholeheartedly volunteered to be a Mother and a friend to me. I believe that my words are never going to be enough to express my highest level of heart-felt gratitude for this phenomenon woman.
I have learnt several things from Mom, and I am still learning more because she is so amazing. I specially thank Mom Khanyi so much for her loving and caring heart, simply because I would not have made it this far in life if it was not for her kind heart. I pray that God blesses her and keeps her because I would definitely return the favour someday. I know that this is something she would not be happy about, simply because she loves and helps people without expecting anything in return. I love her so much and she is everything.” A.N

Lilies represent purity, innocence, and rebirth
“Since I became a part of Home of Hope for Girls it has opened many doors for me - I feel so happy I'm in a home with love and support.
At the moment I am doing Systems and Support, and learning more about computers.
Home of Hope for Girls and Mam Khanyi changed my perspective on life, and now I can express my interests and goals. I feel even more motivated.
Being at Home of Hope for Girls I've learnt to stop being negative about other things and focus on the present and future. Going forward, I would like to apply the things I've learned at Home of Hope, and to one day open an organisation to help other girls like myself.
I also want to fight for women’s equality.” L.C

Cosmos represents order and harmony, beauty, self-reliance, kindness, and infinity.
“I have been at Home of Hope for 10 years now and I am a Graduate in Fashion Design. I'm beyond grateful to Home of Hope for giving love and teaching us how to live without fear. I feel very blessed for getting this kind of love. The lesson I have taken most from Mam Khanyi is courage and fearlessness in life.
I'm inspired to tell my story through fashion, and to teach young people skills at an early age. I would love to one day have my own talk show – it will be all about the challenges that young people face.” S.M

Daisies are a great reminder of New Beginnings
“I love being at Home of Hope because I have a big family here. I have a mother and sisters who love me unconditionally and who support me.
Mam Khanyi is everything to me. She has taught me a lot about life, she has taught me the difference between wrong and right, and what life is like outside our warm and beautiful home. Because I have her by my side, I know that when I work hard, I can look forward to a bright future!” N.M

Sunflowers symbolise loyalty & adoration
I have been with Home of Hope for 14 years and for me Home of hope is a place I call home, a place where one’s dignity is restored, a place where one is given a second chance and encouraged to aim for the skies because there is nothing we cannot achieve if we set our heart and mind to it.  It is a place where I am accepted and not judged, a place where I am free to be myself and a place where I am nurtured.  S.S

Iris flowers represent faith, hope, courage, wisdom, and admiration.
“My whole life changed the day I stepped into Mam Khanyi’s office. She embraced me and believed in me from the first time she laid eyes on me. She filled me with hope that I can be more than my circumstances. Mam Khanyi taught me that I have a story and that my story matters. Her passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable and I am a proud product of that passion.” H.N

The Aloe Vera plant has come to symbolize beauty, healing, and protection
“Poverty takes dignity away from people, so Home of Hope for Girls is restoring that human dignity. Life is about us, the children, and me. What the home offers firstly is family and education because those are the keys for you to open the world.
The more children we serve, the more our world would be a better place as those children are our presidents of tomorrow.” K.M
