One-of-a-Kind Float Trip!

In partnership with Winding Waters River Expeditions, Wallowology is offering a special adventure for the naturalist! The usual 18-mile, 1-day float trip on the Grande Ronde has been extended to 40 miles! And Wallowology will supply three Science Guides so there is plenty of knowledge to go around.

This is a fundraiser for Wallowology—WWRE is donating 50% of all proceeds to Wallowology—Please help spread the word!

Congratulations Judy –
Good Foods Foundation National Award!

Wallowology’s very own Educational Programs Coordinator, Judy Goodman, had to come clean that she has been moonlighting. She could not hide it anymore when her business BGood Bars won the Good Foods Foundation national award for Best Snack Bar in America with her Cranberry Hemp BGood Bar. Serious, we are very proud of her! Keep up the good work Judy, and keep bringing the cast-off BGood Bar end pieces to staff meetings!

Reflection of the Month

A snow seasons' muse . . . on strange tracks in the snow.

 Ahhh . . . this is the season of long fire-side tales . . .
of stink-badgers and stink-bears and how the skunk-cabbage got it's name.
Let the scented smokes roil . . . creating sacred space . . .
to speak of carcajou and pekan,
of frogs with tails and fish that walk . . .
How might we call such varmints by gender or age,
bucks or boars, jacks or jills, hobs or jennys,
or kits and crias, pups and whelps . . .
and how many makes a surfeit?
There be mammals that fly and birds that walk,
some phosphoresce and others simply fluoresce,
while swamp gases haunt and make miasmas.
Surely 'tis a wonder to speak of such things in the long-dark,
and other such creatures of legend and lark
some appear only if believed, though scent to tell
may linger with spraint or spray or rubs and reaches.
The spaces we live are littered with lore
and long lost tales with lessons and gore
for imagination is the stuff of creative energies.

Ralph Anderson, having retired from a career with the U.S. Forest Service and as a consulting Wildlife Biologist, continues to offer his perspectives, insights and perusal of the current flow of science discoveries and its implications via postings on the Wallowology facebook page. The range of links he posts runs from hard science of physics, mathematics, geo-spatial, archaeological and natural sciences to applications in education, fun and play.  He tries to dodge the politics of most issues though they are implicit in many of the articles. A common denominator he seeks in his postings is information, a widening perspective, appreciation for all that is around us and fun.

Wallowology! Natural History Discovery Center, in downtown Joseph, opened to the public in June 2014.  We invite participants to explore and discover Eastern Oregon's lands and waters through exhibits, workshops, and evening presentations by scientists, artists and others.

Our mission is to inform, inspire, and involve residents and visitors in the conservation of ecosystems and landscapes that support and sustain rural communities throughout Eastern Oregon.

Wallowology! is the public education division of Eastern Oregon Legacy Lands, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public benefit nonprofit corporation whose purposes are scientific, educational, and charitable. Based in science and education, EOLL's natural and cultural history programs include research, conservation planning, land acquisition, and policy development.
