JUNE 2019

An occasional sampling of activity from across the diverse practice of Transsolar.

/ Recently completed

Parliament West Block Renovation, Ottawa, Canada

Architect Architecture 49, EVOQ
What we're excited about

  • - The triple glazed roof to form the new House of Commons chamber

  • - The unique design requirements for the House of Commons include two extremely different operating modes (house in-session and not-in-session). Light and acoustic levels are dictated by television broadcast needs, security concerns, and even clothing factors of the parliament

Festival Folk High School, Roskilde, Denmark

Architect COBE, MVRDV
What we're excited about

  • - Conversion of a 32,000 sf former cement factory into a one-of-its-kind high school located to the west of Copenhagen on the Danish island of Seeland

    - Transsolar supported the design team to create a light-flooded and comfortable learning environment for students and teachers, who live in the school during the semester

Alnatura Campus, Darmstadt, Germany

Architect haas cook zemmrich STUDIO 2050
What we're excited about

  • - Alnatura is Europe's largest office building with rammed earth facades

  • - The façade has a radiant heating and cooling system integrated directly on the interior sides of the rammed earth walls

  • - The building is made of recycled or natural materials wherever possible: the structure of the gable roof is made of wood, and lava rock gravel is used for insulating the rammed earth

School of Design and Environment, Singapore

Architect Serie Architects, Multiply Architects
What we're excited about

  • - Singapore's first new-build net-zero energy building creates as much energy as it consumes

  • - Transsolar guided the design team through seven design charrettes resulting in an innovative hybrid cooling system. The rooms are supplied with minimal cool air at higher temperatures and humidity levels, augmented with elevated air speeds from ceiling fans

/ Selected work in progress

Sortimo Campus Electromobility, Zusmarshausen, Germany

Architect Wunderle + Partner

Automotive equipment manufacturer Sortimo is building the world's largest electric 'filling station' close to the German motorway A8. Customers will charge their cars while also being able to shop and work at the "Innovation Park" for electric mobility. 4,000 e-cars will refill using renewable energy from Transsolar's optimized concept: a portion from rooftop PV panels coupled with stationary lithium-ion batteries, with the remainder from regional renewable electricity.

Center for Computing & Data Sciences, Boston University, Boston, MA, USA

Architect KPBM Architects

Boston University's new Data Sciences building will consolidate the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics and Statistics and the Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science and Engineering in one building at the heart of Boston University's Charles River Campus. According to KPMB Architects, "the design maximizes opportunities for mixing, interaction and interconnectivity."

Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA

Architect Goody Clancy

When client, architect, consultant and mission align, you get the lowest-energy building on campus. This new building houses a new institute focused on energy and society and its design and operation intend to reflect that, focusing on excellent envelope quality and engaging users with the control of their comfort and ventilation.

Axel Springer Campus, Berlin, Germany

Architect OMA Office for Metropolitan Architecture

The new building of the Axel Springer media group in Berlin will welcome some 3,500 employees and features a 115 feet tall atrium encased in a prismatic bubble of glass. Much of the conceptual design work was devoted to maintaining the exceptional spatial and visual quality of the atrium as a natural light source for the building.

Transsolar Academy

Collaborative Project for Academy Fellows

We have started the third leg of our Academy Education program, with a twist: instead of working on an individual, personal project, the current Academy fellows will be working on an annual project as a group. The goal is to practice the integrated design process by collaborating as a team and to deepen the knowledge of particular climate responsive strategies. For this inaugural annual project, Transsolar Academy fellows are looking deeper into the Language Laboratory and Tomatis Research Center in Auroville, India.
