NEWS
OCTOBER 2019

An occasional sampling of activity from across the diverse practice of Transsolar.

Projects

/ Recently completed

The Brearley School, New York, NY, USA

Architect KPMB
What we're excited about

  • - Brearley's realization of a dream and vision for a new school building; ushering in a new era for their students with a state of the science learning environment

  • - Going above and beyond NYC-standards and responding in an exemplary way to the New York City context in which it was built

  • - The envelope is insulated well beyond code minimum and features double glazing with two low-e coatings to further reduce heat loss. The building also features minimum ventilation air with active chilled beams – unusual for a school building in New York City

Mui Ho Fine Arts Library, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA

Architect Wolfgang Tschapeller
What we're excited about

  • - A new student space at Cornell that is highly comfortable and energy-conscious

    - Suspension of the entire stack area in the center of the building, literally showcasing the very soul of the new Fine Arts Library and the roof, introducing natural daylight into all areas

    - Transsolar's holistic approach minimized the presence of systems in the library volume, allowing visual continuity of the stacks

Ventspils Concert Hall and Music School, Ventspils, Latvia

Architect haascookzemmrich STUDIO2050
What we're excited about

  • - Energy efficiency via room-by-room system operation including an innovative application of decentralized floor-integrated ventilation units, hybrid ventilation, and minimization of technical equipment through load reduction

  • - Box windows with cavity integrated shading and optimized size of windows in relation to daylighting

  • - Earth ducts, natural ventilation of performance spaces and foyer, and daylighting to the concert hall

School Building for Two Classes, Xuan Hoa, Lao Cai, Vietnam

Architect 1+1>2
What we're excited about

  • - A comfortable, friendly learning facility for 20 primary students from ethnic minorities in northwestern Vietnam

  • - The clay brick window and wall structure meet the desire for better comfort, environmental friendliness and local identity

  • - 4,000 dried leaves used for the roof system are not only a local architecture feature but also reduce heat transmission

/ Selected work in progress

Singapore Pavilion EXPO 2020 Dubai, UAE

Architect WOHA

WOHA has been selected to design the Singapore Pavilion for the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. Located in the expo's sustainability district, the pavilion is inspired by its theme of 'nature. nurture. future.', showcasing Singapore's innovations and aspirations as a resilient, livable city in nature. It operates entirely on solar energy and solar desalination systems and is net-zero in energy over the 6-month world expo period.

The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, Rwanda, Africa

Architect MASS Design Group

The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund will provide the Fossey Fund with a purpose-built campus to amplify their mission of conservation; to protect and study gorillas; train the next generation of African conservationists, and to build the conservation capacity of local communities. The Campus will be a global example of socially and environmentally responsible design. The campus design focuses on maximizing daylight, thermal comfort, and natural ventilation, while minimizing energy consumption and will be built with local, natural building materials to invest in the local economy and protect the unique ecosystem of the existing region.

USO – The Perfumed Cloud at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, UAE

Creators Mathilde Laurent for Maison Cartier and Transsolar

From October 30 to February 1, visitors to the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be able to experience the olfactory art installation USO – The Perfumed Cloud (USO = Unidentified Scented Object), created by Maison Cartier's in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent with Transsolar. Continuing the museum's mission to offer innovative experiences, this installation offers a magical sensory journey into a perfumed cloud.

A Red Steel Circle, Genoa, Italy

Architects Stefano Boeri Architetti, Metrogramma Milano, Inside Outside

The Red Steel Circle, planned to be constructed at the site of the tragic 2018 Genoa bridge collapse, is intended to be a relationship-building structure: it is a bike-pedestrian road, equipped with a 393 feet high wind tower which, together with solar collectors on the roof of the buildings, produces renewable energy to be stored and distributed to the buildings in the area. Transsolar was responsible for developing the environmental comfort and energy efficiency concept and is looking forward to working with the design team on this masterplan project.

Transsolar Academy

We love staying in touch with Transsolar Academy (TSA) alumni because we are curious about their next adventures and enjoy following them on their paths to success. We've reached out to some of our alumni with the request to write a few words on how the Academy has influenced their lives and how their time with Transsolar has shaped their career path. The feedback we received can be viewed on our Transsolar Academy Instagram account, #TranssolarAcademy.

Just one little anecdote: Upon his return to Uganda, former Academy fellow Achilles Ahimbisibwe immediately organized a studio called "Uganda – St. Gabriel Entrepreneurship & Community Center," bringing German and Ugandan architectural students together. It was organized by the Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) and the State Academy of Fine Arts (ABK) in Stuttgart. Christian Degenhardt – the first education coordinator for TSA and now representing ABK – met Achilles recently in Kampala and was happy to congratulate Achilles on his new position: Associate Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at UMU. He is responsible for the education program.
