It's time for Congress to pay interns

Here’s an idea to ponder on Labor Day: Why not pay people who work?

Others can grapple with the merits of a universal basic income or the question of whether Division I athletes are students or employees.

But this one is easy: Let’s put an end to unpaid Capitol Hill and political campaign positions, the entry-level jobs so perversely enticing to college graduates focused on public service. Congress will soon have an opportunity to make needed headway on this front.

Inside the UN efforts to regulate autonomous killer robots

Amandeep Gill has a difficult job, though he won’t admit it himself. As chair of the United Nations’ Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW) meetings on lethal autonomous weapons, he has the task of shepherding 125 member states through discussions on the thorny technical and ethical issue of “killer robots” — military robots that could theoretically engage targets independently. It’s a subject that has attracted a glaring media spotlight and pressure from NGOs like Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, which is backed by Tesla’s Elon Musk and Alphabet’s Mustafa Suleyman, to ban such machines outright.

Upcoming jour férié

Jour fériés are public holidays and there is one coming up very soon.

This Thursday, the 6th of September, it will be the a Genevois religious holiday, called the Jeûne genevois.
Dating back to the 16th century, Jeûne genevois is a fast on the Thursday after the first Sunday of September.

During this holiday, plum pies (tartes aux pruneaux) made the day before are traditionally served. Banks, post offices, shops, restaurants and bars are closed. In solidarity with Protestants facing persecution, the whole of Geneva spends the day praying.

The other cantons of Switzerland celebrate the  Jeûne Fédéral (federal fast), on the third Sunday of September.

If you are uncertain whether your respective organisation considers this days as holidays, we advise that you confirm this point with your supervisors to be sure.

42nd La Bâtie-Festival of Geneva

This year's la Batie festival has already started and it will be taking place till the 16th of September.

This festival is multidisciplinary, dedicated to the "current scene", focusing on new aesthetics.

The programming mixes local and international artists and it is an abundant, stimulating, popular, resolutely contemporary festival, deeply rooted in the local landscape and recognized on the international scene (can you tell how much we like it?).

The future of the Large Hadron Collider
No automatic alt text available. It's true right that from time to time, some of us like to pretend that we actually know about science? Well, with this upcoming public conference we can stop pretending and actually learn something for a change.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is the largest and most powerful accelerator in the world. The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project aims to crank up the performance of the LHC in order to increase the potential for discoveries after 2025.
