UN consultants could fall below poverty line.

After years of administrative uncertainty, short-term employees at the United Nations in Geneva are now being told to pay Swiss taxes or face fines. Consultants say that may send some of them below the national poverty line, if that’s not already the case.

When Gender Parity Knocks at the UN Door, Does Merit Fly Out of the Window?

As gender empowerment gathers momentum, both inside and outside the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to announce shortly a set of new proposals to improve UN human resources policies– specifically aimed at increasing gender and geographical diversity within the Secretariat.  When he swore in Michele Bachelet as the new High Commissioner for Human Rights back in September, he also anointed a new Ombudswoman.

These two swearings-in bring the parity of women to men, 24 to 22 — 24 women to 22 men in the Secretary-General’s Senior Management Group, perhaps for the first time in the 73-year history of the world body.

Critics slam UN Human Rights Council's election of "unqualified" new members.

Critics on Friday slammed the United Nations Human Rights Council for electing ten new members that are either “unqualified” or have “questionable” human rights records.

Around a third of the seats on the 47-member council, based in Geneva, were up for grabs for slots lasting from 2019-2022. A 97-vote majority from the 193 nations that make up the UN’s General Assembly is needed for the green light.

Side by side, from heaven to earth: Rwanda and Idjwi Island, DRC

Rwanda has had a dramatic, rich and complex history over the last 50 years. Many know the genocide but much less what followed this dark period. Yet the country has undergone significant changes: population increase, agricultural and reforestation policies, new environmental reforms and significant urbanisation.

This is Rwanda is an exhibition of 20 monochrome images. Taken during flyovers for the making of the book This is Rwanda, they will present two approaches: vast landscapes showing some of the features of Rwanda’s topography, and closer shots, highlighting typical details of the life and environment of the Land of a thousand hills.
