This month marks an exciting series of events that create possibilities for participants and families with disabilities.

I’m thrilled to announce that two Challenge Aspen athletes have been selected to participate in this month’s Special Olympics Unified ski and snowboard competitions for their first experience as competitors at ESPN’s X Games Aspen. Tanner Jadwin has been skiing with Challenge Aspen for 7 years and has earned Platinum in NASTAR, while Matthew Boyles has been racing for 15 years and has captured more than 22 gold and silver medals in Special Olympics and NASTAR competitions. Look for Challenge Aspen’s yellow volunteer jackets in the cheering section at the base of Buttermilk on Friday, January 21st at 2:30pm. Unified Sports breaks down stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities and promotes social inclusion through athletics. Learn more about Unified Sports here.

January is also home to the first of 13 winter Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (CAMO) retreats, serving injured veterans through the opportunity to participate in outdoor healing. We continue to seek funding to support these incredible retreats that will serve 130 veterans who were injured in service to our country and are pleased to introduce our newest CAMO partner, Southwest Airlines. We are in need of financial support and in kind support for these retreats to help cover the expenses of meals, flights, and outdoor activities for individuals who risked their own lives and health for our freedom. To sponsor a veteran, sponsor a winter retreat, or to donate airline miles or a group meal, please contact Emily or John.

Challenge Aspen impacts more than the lives of our participants. You, along with our staff and volunteers, have the opportunity to be inspired with every interaction. A recent participant and his family opened up about how Challenge Aspen impacts their family, and graciously shared photos and videos from their experience in returning to the mountains this winter. Please take a moment to enjoy Ari’s brief video above or here and allow him to inspire joy and gratitude in the days and month ahead!

Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (CAMO) Programming
CAMO Programs have officially begun for the season, and what an amazing kick off! The snow conditions couldn’t be better, and our first group from the Air Force Wounded Warrior Project are having the time of their lives learning in the snow, and having fun in the sun. The CAMO staff is stoked that the season holds 12 more retreats, each giving 10 veterans this incredible opportunity. We are grateful to have a talented staff of instructors to help guide them through their growth, and the support of Aspen Snowmass to host them this wonderland of a community.

“The experience, confidence building, freedom and fresh air – all of it has helped me mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally – it’s amazing.”  - Christina, USAF Veteren

Partner Spotlight: Southwest Airlines
Throughout Southwest Airlines’ 50-year history, they have been committed to supporting the brave military men and women. The company has more than 7,200 employees in the Southwest Airlines Family who have served or are currently serving our country, and over 1,550 military spouses. Their gratitude for the military also extends to the communities they serve. Challenge Aspen is thrilled to partner with Southwest, who is providing complimentary airline travel so active-duty and retired servicemen and women can continue to participate in CAMO retreats completely free of charge to them, furthering our mission to create life-changing opportunities and bring hope and healing! THANK YOU, Southwest!

Sensory Santa
This holiday season, Challenge Aspen partnered with The Town of Snowmass and The Collective in Base Village to provide a calmer Santa experience for anyone who needed it. The lights were dimmed, loud noises, and music eliminated and Santa connected one-on-one with our participants. All of our participants and volunteers had an awesome time mingling, chatting with Santa, and making fun holiday crafts.
