Greetings, programs! And Happy New Year! Wait..is it supposed to be "Happy New Year" or "Happy New Years," now that I think about it. Ah Hell...who cares? Anyway, welcome to Issue 12 of the Sovryn Tech Newsletter, the very first of 2018!

I know I have a lot of new subscribers, so welcome to you! I hope you understand that the Sovryn Tech Newsletter is a very unique animal, filled with tech news, tech tips, videos, and even (at the end) erotic short fiction from the greater Sovryn Universe (and hey...if that's not your bag, just enjoy the rest of the newsletter since I mark the erotic fiction with a big "WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT" picture,
anyways)! There's gold in every one of these here hills, I assure.

What are the plans for the Sovryn Tech Newsletter in 2018? Glad you asked. What was originally meant to be a bi-weekly newsletter is now going to shift to a monthly newsletter. Since I'm planning on 2018 being a year of pairing down,
efficiency, and project completion (some years in the making) for Sovryn Tech, part of that process includes busting this newsletter down to monthly so that other projects can flourish for now. And as those are completed, perhaps back to a bi-weekly schedule.

As it turns out, a few of the things I didn't expect for this newsletter is that:

A.) The erotic short fiction would be the most popular part, and that damn popular, at that.
B.) Said erotic short fiction would end up racking up into the 1000's of words per story, as to where originally it was meant to be really, really short.
C.) No one really minds how freaky, wild, or strange the erotic short fiction would get (and boy does it get weird). I mean, I knew you knew I was a freak, but I didn't think you'd be so accepting...downright excited, actually.

INTERESTING NOTE: This month's short fiction isn't actually erotic! :O

Point being, you're pretty much getting the same amount of content I planned on when I started this with a monthly issue, regardless, due to the length of some of the stories, it's just going to be condensed to one issue. And don't worry, the wildest stories have yet to be told! WOO!

HOW TO SAVE YOUR BRAIN AND YOUR BATTERY LIFE BY GOING GREYSCALE


Yes, it's true. Recently on Sovryn Tech I've been raising the red flag (as have others) on how smartphones may be doing us much more harm than good today. 10 or so years ago, I don't think we ever could have anticipated that these little fondle slabs would end up having over 20 sensors in them, be so dramatically insecure, or become the standard interface by which we seem to engage with the world; from communicating with friends and lovers, to doing banking, and even things like AR.

But it's happened, and perhaps it's time to rethink our relationship with these little devices. Or at least put as much thought into them as the hardware and app designers do. And they put in a lot of thought into all of this mobile stuff. A lot.

One trick that is becoming popular amongst the more "attention conscious" crowd (and understand, we live in an
absolutely dystopia of attention right now) is to put your phone into "monochrome mode." Basically, this is a feature--available on both iOS and Android--used for either accessibility purposes (color blind people, for example) or as part of a "battery saver" plan for when your battery gets below a certain level.

And while the battery saving effects are quite real (believe me, it makes a world of difference when your display isn't splashing with color, this matches the old trick of using a black background for your device to save on battery, too), it also saves your mind. Or your attention, more specifically.

The New York Times recently wrote about how the human reaction to color has evolved to cause us to react, often acting as warning signs (see that red notification...uh huh...yes, you did), and tech companies are well aware of this. The story is linked to below, but the bottom line is that putting an end to all of the colorful trickery that Silicon Valley imposes on us gives us a little more control over these "attention boxes" in our pockets. For me personally, it works. In
fact it almost works too well. Sometimes I'll miss a notification from someone because of it. But I'll take it, because 9 times out of 10, nothing is that important.

For iOS users, it is a pain in the fucking ass to find the setting for it. But for Android users, it's not simple, but it is a bit simpler. You'll want to go to SETTINGS on your device, then go to ABOUT PHONE. Now scroll donwto where it says BUILD NUMBER, and press that 7 times. It will then activate DEVELOPER MODE, and when you back to the main SETTINGS screen, you'll see DEVELOPER OPTIONS as a new option. Tap that, and then scroll way down to SIMULATE COLOR SPACE, tap it, and choose MONOCHROMANCY (oooh, sounds like a dark art!). Then you're done!

NOTE: There's a reason DEVELOPER OPTIONS isn't available by default, as it may open you to a potential security risk, but I think the options it gives you makes it worth the while.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR WINDOWS PC IS PROTECTED FROM MELTDOWN AND SPECTRE

 
2018 really started with a bang (not the pleasurable kind) when we found out that practically every Intel-based PC since 1995 was susceptible to fairly clever exploit, and even AMD and ARM-based devices were in trouble. Covered on a recent Sovryn Tech, Meltdown and Spectre are two security exploits that take advantage of aspects so core to the processes (pun intended) of the modern computer that it's taking time for many companies (hardware and software) to prevent them from being a security risk, and there also isn't a lot of clarity out there as to what has been patched/fixed and what hasn't. Understand, this is one of the worst exploits ever discovered in the history of computing (and, to add insult to injury, apparently it was known and written about almost 20 years ago).

NOTE: Amazingly, due to the limited implementation of its ARM processor, the $35 Raspberry Pi mini-computer--a personal favorite of mine--is NOT at risk by Meltdown or Spectre. How about that little PC, huh? Goddamn winner, that thing.

Fortunately, one of my long-time personal heroes--Steve Gibson of the Security Now Podcast (my favorite podcast)--is here to help with his usual programming daring do. His latest software, InSpectre, will scan your Windows PC to see what has been done to resolve both Spectre and Meltdown, or help you know what needs to done with your device.

Again, this is Windows-only, but since it's the most used operating system in the world (more or less), and where many people keep their "keys to the kingdom," this is worth mentioning to all of you and I suggest you use it if you're not already sure about your PC's present status in the matter.

WE CAN NOW TIME TRAVEL (MATHEMATICALLY)

Hey, when I'm wrong, I admit I'm wrong. Not to say necessarily that I was wrong, just that up until now the evidence and theories suggested otherwise. Here's the deal: For most of my life I thought that it was impossible to time travel into the past. Through the lens of the Theory of Relativity, I had no problem accepting--and it was mathematically provable--that we could time travel into the future, but the past? Nope.

Well, I was wrong. It has now been proven--again, mathematically--that we can time travel into the future and the past according to new findings by theoretical physicist and mathematician, Ben Tippett, from the University of British Columbia in Canada. It's remarkable work.

But what's stopping us from going into the future and seeing the beautiful anarchist future ahead of us (and maybe staying to live in it), or going to the ancient past to walk among
a the thriving civilization of Atlantis? Well, we just don't have the right stuff to do it...yet.

"While is it mathematically feasible, it is not yet possible to build a space-time machine because we need materials - which we call exotic matter - to bend space-time in these impossible ways, but they have yet to be discovered," says Tippett.

Amazing, all the same. And to think I thought that I was breaking the laws of physics all these years by

Sure, the restaurants are great, and you’ve probably got some decent sports team to root for (and amazing pro wrestling events to attend). But the bright lights of a big city mean that at night you can rarely see more than a few stars in the sky, and these stunning timelapses of the galaxy overhead will make you realize the spectacular show you’re missing every evening.

If you’re a stargazing enthusiast, or just looking up at stars as I do, you’ve probably traveled to a secluded spot as far away from the light pollution of big cities as you can find. That’s exactly what Adrien Mauduit had to do to capture the star-filled
timelapses in his latest short film, Galaxies Vol. II: Wonders of the Winter Night Skies. Except that Mauduit traveled to France, Switzerland, Spain, Iceland, Denmark, and Canada to find the darkness he needed. But as you can see, the results were totally worth all the effort.

This video is absolutely breathtaking.
Mega Man 30 Rockman 30th Anniversary: History of Capcom Series, Origin Secrets Trivia & Did You Know

Hard to believe it's now been over 30 years since Mega Man graced anyone's television screen via the little console that could--the Nintendo Entertainment System (don't get me started about how you could play it in DOS)--but it has, and the character is finally making a true and proper come back with the recently announced Mega Man 11.

I'm a huge fan, and have been enjoying the Legacy Collection releases that the Blue Bomber has enjoyed in recent years (including the upcoming Mega Man X Legacy Collection), along with all of the sequel series and spiritual
succssor games (Mega Man Zero, Mega Man ZX, Azure Striker Gunvolt, Mighty No. 9, etc.), and I even loved the more recent retro-styled Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 when they were released for the Wii a few years ago. But to have another true and proper sequel for the original saga is a real treat in Mega Man 11.

And to get ready for all that energy canister-filled goodness, this 30-year retrospective documentary by
Gajillionaire is worth a watch. It's amazing to discover that Mega Man may have the most amount of games of any single character in history...even more than Mario! I didn't expect it, but then I was just as shocked to find out in the past that Dracula is the character with the most cinematic films in history...who knew?

So check this action out and get ready for more of Rockman...err...Mega Man in 2018! WOO! What a year!

MPC Blade Runner 2049 VFX breakdown

Okay, so no surprise to anyone, but I'm a crazy fan of the Blade Runner franchise. In fact just today as I'm typing this, I got the blu-ray for Blade Runner 2049 and I can't wait to soak in that masterpiece some more.

One of the first things that blew my mind when the lovely and hyper-intelligent Dr. Stephanie Murphy and I saw it in theaters was when (SPOILER ALERTS!!!!!!) Rachel--or really, a replica of a replicant (say that three times fast) of Rachel--appears on the screen...and hot diggity-damn it looks just like Sean Young did way back in the 80's in the original film. My jaw was on the floor. Because for the very first time I truly saw an digital actor best the "uncanny valley," meaning she looked totally human, no hints of CGI.

It still amazes me, and I was dying to figure out how the VFX wizards pulled it off. Back in October, Entertainment Weekly revealed some of the secrets behind Blade Runner 2049's most startling cameo, but the VFX company who resurrected Rachael for the sequel has finally shared a fascinating and detailed breakdown of how it created the flawlessly lifelike digital double.

A blockbuster film like Blade Runner 2049 will have many visual effects studios working on different shots, but it was the Moving Picture Company who handled what are arguably some of the most complex, and most impressive, shots in the movie. Using various techniques, which included scanning actress Sean Young, 35 years after she originally played Rachael, MPC was able to design a digital stand-in and animate it using a motion-captured performance from another actress.

The techniques MPC used aren’t necessarily new, but again, often times there’s just something not-quite-right with digital doubles that can distract viewers and take away from a character’s performance. Remember how odd Princess Leia and Wilhuff Tarkin appeared in Rogue One? But with MPC’s digital Rachael, visual effects may have finally crossed the uncanny valley.

The what?! I know, I know. You hear "Screenless Office" and you're ready to break out the rolodex and the paper planner (which might not be a bad idea, actually), but hear me out. Or rather, hear the creators of the idea out:

"The Screenless Office is a system for working with media and networks without using a pixel-based display. It is an artistic operating system. The office presents a radically alternative form of everyday human interaction with media. It is constructed using free/libre/open hard- and software components, especially for print, databases, web-scraping and tangible interaction. Yep, that sounds wild. But it sounds like my kind of wild. Something to stir the imagination and maybe even allow for a more productive workflow, or at least give you your attention span back
for the task. As Herb Simon said in 1971 (!):

"...the wealth of information means a dearth of something else: a scarcity of whatever it is that information consumes. What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention."

A SMOL TALE FROM THE SOVRYN UNIVERSE

"All That We Leave Behind"

  Agent Sovryn slowly brought the helicopter up from its landing pad in the Wolf’s Lair, the main rotor shifting from a wind-whipping, echoing sound to a near complete silence once they had left the rocky surroundings of its resting place and into the open air.

  Brian was almost shocked at just how quiet this new helicopter was as he steered it forward and away from the Wolf’s Lair. Redwolf II—as the chopper was named, in honor of the helicopter it replaced—was powered by a new type of reactor than its predecessor, taking advantage of new tech that Dr. Goldblossom had developed after studying the systems onboard their starship: the Hypercronius. The new power source solved the problem of having to take the rotors out of “Stealth Mode” to conserve energy. With near limitless energy, “Stealth Mode” was now permanent, and quieter than before.

  He needed the quiet right now.

  The veritable desert he saw below him, and the seemingly unending sky before him, both brought solace to his mind. An uninteresting nothingness that gave distraction no quarter. The system readouts ahead of his controls were largely the same as they had been since the first Redwolf supercopter, allowing for a familiarity that also betrayed any need for conscious thought in their use by him.

  For the briefest moment, he considered playing music as he was wont to do while flying, but the embracing silence begged him not to.

  He flew on in pure, stealthy silence.

  Agent Sovryn’s attention went inward and briefly to the past. There were memories that he had that weren’t entirely his own, but a part of him had experienced them. They haunted him regardless. He remembered his time in the military and all of the lives he had seen snuffed out, so many of which he had personally wrongfully taken. All life was sacred, he learned too late. He remembered seeing this universe’s Natalia Rombova die in Stephanie’s arms at the “hands” of a blockchain gone mad. And experiencing something he never thought he could care about—an android woman, Hadaly—cut to pieces before his eyes by the agents of that same ruthless enemy. Another of his lovers Elizabeth staying in the future of a strange alternate dimension that he could only describe as a remix, not knowing what was her ultimate fate.

  And Pixel—his compass, confidant, and lover—was away on some mysterious mission to the asteroid Eros. A mission that he felt was taking far too long. But he had to trust she would return. One day.

  Back at the Antarctica Base, that left Dr. Stephanie Murphy, Dr. Miriam Goldblossom, Valeria, and Dr. Elektra Lesbos—the last of whom he’d only started to get to know, but was quite fond of her, already. The other three, he loved. Every fiber of his being--his happiness--intertwined with the lives of those three women.

  Valeria, who he and Stephanie found by pure chance as she worked as a stripper at a nightclub, had become the heart, passion, and sometimes necessary aggression that fed the rest of Agent Sovryn’s motley crew of outcasts.

  Dr. Goldblossom. The engineer, brains, and remarkable lover behind all of the technology that he and his team used every day. They were nothing without her. And her empathetic love and all-in giving of herself in the frequent lovemaking sessions they all engaged inspired not only him but all of the other women, as well. Miriam was incomparable.

  And Stephanie. The love of his life. Brilliance, magnificence, unmatched beauty, and a
regality so powerful that consciously or unconsciously, mentally or physically, all bowed to her. Though rarely spoken, everyone on Agent Sovryn’s team knew that everything was genuinely done for her, and her continued safety. She was the nexus of the universe in all of their minds, not just Brian’s.

  The thought of anything happening to any of them terrified him. He had already lost so much. Everyone had already lost so much. If it wasn’t the Ominous Blockchain, it was the
Nazis, or Nostra. There was always some streak of authoritarianism trying to stop what humanity could become, and what Agent Sovryn and his lovers were becoming. The type of relationship and intense romantic love that he and his team members shared wouldn’t even be accepted by the very people they were trying to save.

  And he saw no end in sight to their attempts to stop that force of peaceful evolution.

  Maybe staying in outer space was the solution, he thought. Maybe with their starship, the Hypercronius, they could head out of the solar system forever and start a new home. Leave their earthly bases behind. Since he and his team were altered by the Transmogrifier to become Homo futurum, he didn’t know if they could even age or die. Maybe they could live forever on some far off planet, or on the Hypercronius itself for all eternity in the peace and endless love they enjoyed while aboard her.

  But as he continued to fly the supercopter south towards the Antarctica Base, seeing the remains of so much history, so much human achievement, and the stunning beauty of the changing landscapes, he remembered why the jewel of a planet known as Earth shouldn’t be given up on yet. It was a big world, with plenty of room for himself, his lovers, and fellow anarchists to co-exist and learn alongside those that weren’t ready for the beautiful future that was within their grasp.

  “No. We’re not turning it over to the cockroaches yet,” Agent Sovryn said to himself.

  He then depressed the red button at his thumb on Redwolf II’s flight stick, g-forces quickly pressing him tightly against his seat. The familiar roar of the helicopter’s unique jet engines sounded as he rushed to return to his friends. His lovers. His universe.
