Please Return Your Pledge Card (if you haven't yet)
and Increase Your Pledge (if you are able)
to Support our new Director of Music Ministries!
Mother Tracy

Did you realize pledge cards were due last Sunday (Nov. 4)???

According to Suzanne Krakover-Nickel, our stewardship chair, as of Sunday, we had received 46 pledge cards. Last year, we had 82 pledges. If last year is any indication, that means almost half of you who pledged last year have not yet turned in your pledge cards.

Based on the information used to compile our 2018 voting eligibility lists, I've noticed that 125 people gave some kind of financial donation to St. John's in 2018, and yet we only had 82 pledges last year.

This indicates that there are 43 of you out there who gave to St. John's in 2018 but did not make a pledge. PLEASE, consider pledging this year. If you don't pledge, we can't count on your donations as income, and that limits what we can plan to do as a congregation in the coming year. If you know you'll give money to St. John's at some point in 2019, please fill out a pledge card with an estimate of how much we can expect from you. (You can look to your most recent giving statement to see how much you've been giving and consider whether you can increase it or not and use that figure for your pledge card.)

The vestry will be considering a preliminary budget for 2019 at our meeting on Tuesday (11/13). In order for that to be a meaningful use of our time, we need to know how much income we will have to work with in 2019 -- and we can't know that without your pledge!

If you've been following vestry news over the past several months, you know that the vestry approved a compensation range of $30,000 - $50,000 for our new Director of Music Ministries. (The number in the budget for the Music Director last year was $22,000.) Our applicant pool was extremely experienced and highly qualified as a result, and as we begin to interview finalists for the position, I believe we're looking at the higher end of that range in order to pay according to the Anglican Association of Musicians' salary guidelines, which we promised to do in the job posting.

The vestry took a leap of faith by committing to this salary, and I am incredibly grateful for that. The last two musicians employed at St. John's eventually found employment elsewhere because our compensation was so low in a place where cost of living is so high. The vestry's decision to move forward with a 1/2 time Director of Music Ministries (rather than a 1/4 or 3/8 time position) at a salary rate recognized as a standard in the music world is a significant commitment to the future of our music ministry at St. John's. And we're going to need YOUR help to make good on that commitment.

Last year's budget had pledge income at $287,039. Our goal for pledges this year is $325,000 (up nearly $40,000). As of Sunday, $237,640 has been pledged.

This means we need to raise an additional $114,360 in pledges in order to meet our goal in time for the gala dinner celebration at the end of our stewardship campaign on Nov. 18.

So please get your pledge cards in ASAP, and raise your pledge this year if you are at all able. It's no secret that we have some very generous donors in our midst, but we can't let that lull us into a sense of financial complacency. Each of us must stretch ourselves to give as much as we can in order to be full participants in (and not just consumers of) the ministry of this parish.

To be sure your pledge is included in the preliminary budget's income numbers next week, please email your pledge information to Suzanne Krakover-Nickel at suzanneknickel@gmail.com in addition to mailing your physical pledge card.

  • Dec. 9Annual Parish Meeting, Part 1: Election of Vestry Members
  • Feb. 3 (2019) – Annual Parish Meeting, Part 2: Election of Delegates to Diocesan Convention
Please Check the REVISED Voting Lists!
Mother Tracy

I just finished updating the voter lists I put out in early October to reflect changes that have happened since then in voting status for individuals. The revised lists are on the Usher's Table.

Please check these lists and let me know if something seems amiss!!! If I can't find any membership paperwork for you, you'll be listed as inelligible to vote. If that is incorrect, it is easily correctable. Please forgive your new rector's ignorance of your membership history and help me get the records corrected and updated.

Reminder of Voting Criteria:
In order to be eligible to vote in parish meetings, you must be an adult (older than 16) confirmed communicant in good standing, which means you must have:
  • received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism with water in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, whether in this Church or in another Christian Church
  • made a mature public affirmation of Christian faith (in other words, having chosen the faith for yourself, either through being baptized as an adult or being confirmed if baptized as an infant or young child who did not make that decision for yourself)
  • received the laying on of hands by a Bishop of the Episcopal Church (in baptism, confirmation, or reception)
And for the previous year, have been:
  • faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented
  • faithful in working, praying, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God
    • "giving" = having made an identifiable financial donation (of any amount and for any purpose) to the parish in the past 12 months (since the last vestry election, which was on 12/10/17.)
If you are listed as ineligible to vote, it's because according to the church's records, you do not meet at least one of the above criteria. But, OUR RECORDS CAN BE WRONG! Please let me know if you believe you are on the "non-voting" list in error.
Goat Yoga Class at St. John's
Find Your Bliss with Baby Goats
Sat. Nov. 17, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
NOT (just) for children

Mack Ellis is the son of Steve Ellis, former rector of St. John's. He has a flock of his own to tend: a small herd of goats! Mack says,

"We host yoga classes with baby goats that jump on and cuddle with the class participants. We provide animal therapy for the purpose of recharging the heart and soul. We offer a disconnect from everyday life and a chance to focus on the present moment."

Yoga is about health and self awareness, and what's more self-aware than a baby goat? They know they're cute, and they know they want to play with you. Join in the asanas, relax and enjoy some cuddles. It's the greatest yoga of all time. It's yoga with bouncing baby goats! Class will meet on the lawn behind the church. Yoga mats will be provided.

Following our yoga session, Vida Juice Inc will be providing a bottle of their delicious Jun (included with ticket purchase). Jun kombucha is made with organic green tea, honey & botanicals. It's raw, full of live cultures which promote gut health & boost the immune system, and It's soulfully crafted in Santa Cruz.

Costs $30.
