St. John's eNews
December 20, 2018
Merry Christmas from the office staff at St. John's!

There will be no eNews next week, and we will not keep regular office hours between Christmas and New Year's. (Call before you come by to make sure someone is here.)
Mother Tracy will be out of town from Dec. 26 - Jan. 5.

During that time, Pastor Mary Blessing from St. Phillip's in Scotts Valley will be monitoring the parish's pastoral emergency line.

The PASTORAL EMERGENCY LINE is 831-531-7187.
This number is answered 24 hours a day, every day. Please call if you have an urgent pastoral need or if someone is extremely ill or dying.

Faith Leader Assignment
for this Sunday, Dec. 23

9:15-10:15 a.m. in the sanctuary
Childcare is available in the Nursery.

(Yes, we ARE meeting this Sunday!)

To Do Before Class:

  • Read Session 13 (p. 61-65 in Book II - blue book)
  • Complete the updated Spiritual Practice Profile (p. 68-69, Book II), noting that the first column, “Eight Weeks Ago,” will actually be “Three Weeks Ago” (in other words, as of December 2), since we’re not doing the full eight weeks.
  • Complete the Guide for Living Worksheet on p. 71
  • Another (and better) resource for developing a Rule of Life is from the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE) Episcopal monastery in Cambridge, MA. It's called "Living Intentionally: A Workbook for Creating a Personal Rule of Life," and you can download it here:  (It will ask for your name and email address before you can download it. I think you can feel safe giving that info to the monastery; they're not going to spam you.) This is much more time-consuming and involved than the "Guide for Living Worksheet" in the Faith Leader book, so you may not get it entirely finished before this Sunday. But I encourage you to look at it and start thinking about it.

Are you coming to Christmas Dinner?

This is the first year we'll have a Christmas Dinner together at the church. It is potluck, so please RSVP and let us know what you'll be bringing and if you can help set up or clean up.
Note from the Treasurer
Anne Baker
The new year is right around the corner! We can’t finish 2018 without you ❤️ Please complete paying your pledge for the year so we can finish in the black.

Although taxes and charitable giving will be different this year, you may still be able to use a receipt for your taxes. If you aren’t sure about your payment status, and you can’t reach the bookkeeper, please call me (831-334-0362) and I’ll quickly track it down for you.
Thank you for all you do.
The ESL Class sent us a Christmas Card
signed by all of the participants!

2018 Photo Directory2018 Photo Directory
Chrys Sparks & Mother Tracy

The picture directories are (FINALLY) in!

If you came for a photo sitting with Lifetouch or submitted your own photo, then one of the copies is yours. If you haven't picked one up yet, you can find them in the office.

(If your picture is not in the directory, you will be able to get a copy later, after all the people who have pictures in the directory have picked theirs up.)
We know that new folks have joined and other folks' contact information has changed in the meantime. We plan to print an update to the contact information as soon as we can manage in the new year.
For Epiphany (Jan. 6), Bring a Symbol of Your Spiritual Gifts
Mother Tracy

Jan. 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, falls on a Sunday this year, and the Alternative Worship Planning team has another fun, interactive service planned for you. All children will be with us in worship that day (no Sunday School).

EVERYONE (adults and children alike) is asked to bring a symbol of their spiritual gifts to church that day. (You'll find out why we asked you to bring them during the service; for now, just hear this cryptic message and obey. :o)

  • If your spiritual gift is artistry, you might bring a paintbrush.
  • If it is prayer, you might bring a rosary.
  • If it is healing, you might bring a bottle of healing oil or a band-aid.

You may bring more than one symbol if you would like to represent more than one spiritual gift.
