When you think of an idyllic island out in the big blue sea, you probably start to hear the caw of gulls by the shore or the splashing of waves on the side of a boat. But, if your daydream destination is Réunion, you'll want to add a growing number of shark attacks to your little slice of mental paradise.

If that's too terrifying to think up on your own, don't mind us as we drop-in on you with Réunion: Shark Attacks in Paradise.

Dan Duane revisits your worst open water nightmares and paddles out to catch the most pristine narrative waves; all so you can dive into what happened when a massive surge of bull shark attacks overtook the tiny island off the coast of Madagascar.

Starting in 2011, RĂ©union went from being a surfer's paradise to being the world's most likely place to get attacked by a shark. Actually.

Naturally, this led to panic and radically polarized groups as tensions surrounding the attacks and their aftermath started to boil to the surface. Duane – a surfer and author with a streak of adventure – takes us through his own experiences, from learning about Réunion in the 90s to making sense of how local communities came to deal with the undertow of shark attack after shark attack.

Réunion: Shark Attacks in Paradise isn't for the faint of heart. Between 2011 and 2016 Réunion was the site of 16% of the world's fatal shark attacks and a number of these documented attacks serves as a terrifying backdrop for the six episodes that are likely to make you wince and squirm as you take them in.
