Milwaukee was considered party central if you were around in the 1980s and 90s.

...and a young, single woman,

...who was a cop,

...and a soon-to-be convicted murderer.

It's crucial to paint an accurate picture of what things were like for Laurie "Bambi" Bembenek as she joined the Milwaukee Police Department at the age of 21. She was a feminist, she was outspoken, and she was also attractive. The Milwaukee police force didn't value any of that. Plus it was the 1980s and women weren't "supposed to be cops". Despite mandated efforts to make the Milwaukee Police Department more representative of the community it was serving, Bembenek and other women were expected to go along to get along.

On top of that, there was a whole lot of partying, sex, and general debauchery we'd probably call sexual harassment, power exploitation, and lewd misconduct by today's standards.

But all of that was just the beginning.

By age 23, Bembenek was serving a life sentence for murdering her husband's ex-wife. She escaped prison in 1990, fleeing to Thunder Bay, Ontario where a tourist spotted her after watching an episode of America's Most Wanted.

You can't make this stuff up.
