“Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?"

My Addictive Personality

Denial is not a river in Egypt

Forty-four years ago after two separate weeks in a Redwood City alcoholic rehab hospital, I finally quit drinking for good. When I came home the second time I found it was important to avoid shaving lotions and wine vinegar which contained alcohol.  “Dead soldiers” (empty Beefeater gin bottles and wine bottles had to go in the dumpster). I finally made a full recovery from booze, thank God.
On my first trip to Israel In 1983 my new Israeli friends asked why I refused wine at dinner time. When I told them, they commented approvingly, adding  that there are
were few alcoholics in Israel. From childhood, traditional Jewish families enjoy wine at dinner but in moderation.
Thank God I never started smoking, though I remember tobacco companies gave away five-packs of cigarettes to the local high school athletes and “every” cool guy smoked. Later women who smoked were emulated. This was back in the ‘40’s.

But I do seem to have an “addictive temperament.”
There were “”dirty pictures” available under the liquor store counter (but little porn), when I was in high school. Then, the (now discredited) Kinsey Report, came out. I read it in my college library when Playboy and Penthouse mags were becoming all the rage.
Ray Stedman called our attention to two demonic invasions here in Silicon Valley in the ‘60’s, including a Wife Swapping Club at Stanford...nuff said.
I discovered that porn is way more addictive than booze, pot, Ecstasy (Molly), or heroin. Nowadays I understand kids as young as 11 or 12 surf the net for better porn? If parents can’t handle porn and must flee, what about these “innocents?”
Yes, porn mags, tapes, CDs, paraphernalia should go to the dumpster. In my years before Jesus I remember driving to a non-local dumpster to retrieve a magazine I had gotten rid of there of the previous night. Yes real demons are involved.
"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.” (1 Corinthians 10:13-14)

Testing and Proving

Temptations don’t go away just because we have been safe “in Christ” for years—or because we have grown older.

The Greek words for temptation (peirasmos) can also means “testing” (peirao).

New cars, new products, are drive-tested to uncover hidden flaws—pushed beyond expected limits. Life is an endurance race for all of us. A sedentary life is not helpful, muscles need exercise!
Will power is strengthened every time we choose Jesus over self. Drill sergeants know how to turn wimpy boys into discipled soldiers. Good parents enforce house rules. A good mentor challenges the sluggard...
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.” (2 Timothy 2:3-6)
"Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?" (Romans 6:16)
Jesus is the only man who ever lived who never sinned!
Yet He was tested to the extreme, trusting God 365.25 days a year. Who is better qualified than Jesus? Who else can we really trust?

“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?“ (Hebrews 2:1-4)

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

The Healing Power of God and Nature: by Lawrence Hoppis

Adam and Eve first walked away from the Lord and the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden and ate the bitter fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3). Their curse brought sin and death on men and woman and the world we live in suffers a defilement and torment one can plainly see today.

In this difficult time of riots, shortages, pestilence and failings of all kinds among the human institu-tions and systems we need and want to be able to entrust our lives to, one thing stands certain and true. There is better place, a more blessed place awaiting all who put their unfailing trust and abiding obedience (love) in the only one and true Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Until Jesus plan for our lives and our world is all that we want, each day fails in meaning, exposing our poverty.

I want to say, there is a divine doctor and His medicine is to know and follow Him all the days of our lives. When He is in us, doubt has no hold on us, worry cannot find a way into our minds or hearts, and looking to Him is all we need to be whole and well. Do we have this faith to rise up, shun the habituated temptation to tune into news of the latest disaster or political struggle or health or system crisis? Do we have what it takes to abide in Him, remain connected to Him and let Him be our sufficiency in full and complete surrender of all earthly else?

What possible excuse will we have before him in "that day" if we do not? I would love to have you write to me at if you have any questions about being whole in Christ, unafraid in troubled times, unplugged from the addictions and sins that so easily best us and rob our very lives.Take a moment to cast your cares afresh upon Him. Invite Him to be the medicine to connect your life and your soul to His eternal life today and every day. Blessed assurance divine. Oh what a savior is mine!
