Dear Families,

As you surely are aware by now, all students will be required to wear masks all day, every day while they are at school. They will be able to remove masks for eating and drinking, but the overall expectation is that every student will keep their mask on, covering their nose and mouth for the entire day, including when they are outside.

Every student should come to school with at least 2 masks each day. (Students should always wear a mask, and have a back-up available in case their primary mask is soiled or becomes nonfunctional, etc.) We recommend that each student have five reusable masks, but know that many students find disposable masks more comfortable.

These masks should be considered similar to shirts, socks, and other essential wardrobe items. We know that there are many different options for masks available at this point. We encourage you to work with your child(ren) to determine the best mask choice for them based on comfort, breathability, and relative ease of use. Following CDC, IDPH, and CDPH guidelines, we have crafted our own brief guidelines for appropriate masks at Ancona.

Masks SHOULD:

  • Be clean and dry
  • Cover nose and mouth
  • Form a snug fit around nose, cheeks, and chin
  • Be able to be put on and taken off by the student without assistance from an adult

Masks SHOULD NOT:

  • Be neck gaiters or scarves
  • Contain valves or vents
  • Be face shields. (Face shields may be worn with masks, but not in place of masks.)
  • Be made of fabric with visible gaps in the material (such as mesh)
We know that constant mask-wearing will be an adjustment for all of our students. We will be working with our students to teach and reinforce proper mask use. Parents can help by modeling mask-wearing at home, and by practicing wearing and putting on/taking off masks with your child(ren).

Please note that we understand that accidents happen, and students may occasionally forget to bring an extra mask. We will always have a supply of disposable masks at the school for students to use if their mask becomes unusable during the day. However, it is the responsibility of each student to bring 2 ready-to-wear masks to school each day.

This is truly a school year unlike any other, and we appreciate your partnership as we all work to keep our community safe.

Warm regards,

The Ancona School
