Terriers are fun and energetic dogs, but they have hard-wired traits bred into them like to kill vermin independently, digging underground and barking excitedly. In fact, they sometimes are referred to as "terrorists" and even "natural born killers." This drive to hunt vermin varies by Terrier breed and individual dogs, but there is a reason that fuzzy little toys often don't last very long.

Clearly Terriers need to have all the "good manners" taught to the them, like any other breed of dogs. Along with their feistiness, they also excel at some fun activities like Barn Hunt and Scent work. Here are some ideas for books to help you out:

Positive Perspectives by Pat Miller. Great book for good manners and sections on problem behaviors that many Terriers may exhibit.
Barking - The Sound of a Language by Turid Rugaas.
Terrier-Centric Dog Training by Dawn Antoniak Mitchell. The most complete book on Terriers and their behaviors. A must for Jack Russell owners.
Feisty Fido - Help for the Leash Reactive Dog by Patricia McConnell and Karen London.
Barn Hunt: A Game of Hide & Seek for Dogs by Eva Fowler Raczka and Deb M. Eldredge.
Scent Fun and Barn Hunt DVD by Sean McMurray and Bonnie Gutzwiler.
