Design-Build Project Update
We’ve heard from many people that two-way outer roads are the preferred option for this project. People say two-way outer roads are safer than one-way outer roads and make navigating around the area easier.
Two-way outer roads are being considered for this project because, at this stage of the project, all options are still on the table. Two-way outer roads could be beneficial to the project goals because they better address localized access. The roads have existed like this for decades and the ease of access is one of the reasons people told us they live and work here - there’s a clear comfort level drivers have with two-way outer roads. Without parallel routes, I-70 and the outer roads are the only way to travel back and forth, east or west in this area. Two-way outer roads allow for drivers to turn around if they pass their intended location without having to cross over the interstate and go through multiple interchanges. Traveling on a two-way outer road is shorter mileage-wise than one-way outer roads, but as is the case in these interchanges, significant congestion can keep travel times high. One of the drawbacks to two-way outer roads are the number of potential conflict points at the interchanges which is where the majority of crashes happen. There are higher costs associated with two-way outer road system due to the right-of-way that would be needed in order to make it a continuous system.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
As a response to the comments and concerns we’ve heard from the public, we are analyzing both one and two-way outer road options equally in order to set parameters that would allow potential Design-Build teams to provide a solution that is best for the community.
