My Early Years   - Newsletter #28

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart--
These, O God, You will not despise.“
(Psalm 51:17)

My Early Years
Lambert Dolphin and Lawrence Hoppis

When I was five years old living in Shoshone, Idaho I took over an unused chicken coop in back of our house and named it my “man-gaze.” There I imagined growing up to be a rocket scientist (whatever that was).

My mother was not available because of her overwhelming need. Little did I know what God had in mind for me!
I was terrified of school recess where I had to compete for a swing or a slide. My dad was the High School Coach leading state championship teams. One day when I was 6 he gave me a catcher’s mit and asked me to play catch with him. Never again! Fat chance! I wimped out! I chose deliberately to have nothing to do with my dad. My sister Susanne during these times was always my bright and morning star.

My mother Audrey tried to interest me in Sunday school just down the street. No way! I was destined to grow up a nerd! I did not have a clue about trusting Jesus until I was 30 and had no idea He wanted 100% of me until late in my life.

Fast forward eighty-two years. Knowing Jesus personally has made all the difference in the cosmos.
Today an e-mail from a wonderful lady about science and the Bible provoked me to revise an index of my writings related to science and faith. They are here:

Science is only one of my interests but it’s a biggie and I’d like to catch up, God willing.

Remembering Meekness

Ray Stedman defined “meekness” (praotes) as “great strength under perfect control.”

Ray noted that Moses was “very meek.“ Moses had to be—leading nearly two million self-willed, ornery men, women and children (plus much livestock) from the Nile Delta to Kadesh Barnea. It took 40 years!  (See Numbers 11:1-15)

Ray grew up in Montana where young stallions had to be broken every year. A horse that was well-trained and responsive was a “meek“ horse. (A “spirited” horse for riding was to be preferred, however, to an old nag!)

Back in the ‘80’s I packed in to the Superstition Mountains of Arizona in search of the fabled Lost Dutchman mine. I always asked our packer, Ron Feldman, from the O.K. Corral ( for his best horse. That horse and I were one. All I had to do was to speak and my great horse responded! I believe to this day that my spirit was in tune with the spirit of that wonderful animal!
Jesus is supposed to be in the driver’s seat of our lives and when we allow that, unconditionally, life becomes a great adventure!
