SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

With all of the Back to School Nights behind us, our school year is well underway with teachers and staff committed to academic excellence and civic responsibility. With parental support at home, our students are receiving a superior education in the WCUSD where limitless possibilities await for college and career.

The Board is proud to welcome our first cohort of students at the Mt. SAC Early College Academy. The newly constituted school allows students to achieve a high school diploma while earning up to 50 college credits, at no cost to the student or parents, while saving thousands in future tuition costs. The Mt. SAC Early College Academy has limited spaces currently available for freshmen students this inaugural school year.  We will accept applications for the 2019-2020 school year through the District of Choice process from November 1, 2018 - January 1, 2019. For more information, please call the school at (626) 332-7217.

Putting your bond dollars to work, West Covina High School’s new Thyberg Stadium opened in time for the Bulldogs to play their first home game while groundbreaking ceremonies have just taken place for the WCUSD Aquatic Sports Complex and Edgewood Event Center. Architectural drawings are being finalized for the WCUSD Performing Arts Theatre, West Covina High School Science/Career Technology Building, and Hollencrest Gym/Music building and modernization.

In September, the School Board participated in a “Flip the Switch” ceremony symbolizing the conclusion of the District-wide solar project saving the District $700,000 a year and over $15,000,000 over the next 20 years!  Needless to say, the WCUSD facilities department is rocking!

While all of our schools are thriving, I would like to recognize Edgewood for awarding 32 International Baccalaureate (IB) diplomas last year, the highest number of awards in the past three years. We are all looking forward to Edgewood’s authorization visit for the IB Middle Years Programme this fall, which would establish one of the only K-12 IB Programme continuums in the State!

Not only have we expanded our Dual Language Immersion Program to offer classes from transitional kindergarten to third grade, one of our dual language teachers, Mrs. Arreola, from Monte Vista was even recognized as California’s Bilingual Teacher of the Year!

On behalf of the Board of Education and administrators of the West Covina Unified School District, I would like to thank all parents, staff, and community members for your ongoing support. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of our students and it’s truly inspirational.

I look forward to an amazing school year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Charles D. Hinman
Superintendent
West Covina Unified School District
