April 23, 2019  Board Meeting Update
  • The flag salute was led by EDS Elementary students Katrina (4th grade) and Alex (5th grade).  Board members had the opportunity to ask the students questions about their activities both in school as well as after school.
  • The Superintendent shared a video from the recent San Jose Junior League Award Luncheon highlighting Melissa Rhyne.  MEF President and Payne parent, Melissa Rhyne, was award the "Crystal Bowl" for her volunteer work with the Moreland Education Foundation and Moreland School District.
  • Dr. Going introduced the new Dean of Instruction at Easterbrook Discovery School, Nikita Shah. Ms. Shah has been with the District for eleven years and has taught all grade levels with the exception of Kindergarten and 3rd grade. She has participated in many school initiatives as a member of School Site Council, Science and Math Curriculum Adoption Teams, MTA, the Multi-cultural committee, and School Safety Committee.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Destiny Ortega shared a presentation about the proposed Science curriculum adoption for elementary and middle schools. The intended focus was on selecting a curriculum that is engaging, hands-on, teacher-friendly, and included assessments.  Ms. Ortega reviewed the selection process with Board members which began with a survey of TK-8th grade teachers. The selection committee prioritized the feedback from teachers and narrowed their selection to five programs. Publishers from those programs were invited to share information about their program.  Both the elementary and middle school committees chose StemScopes and Discovery Education to pilot. Committee members were trained on each program and piloted them for eight weeks. The committee then discussed the pros and cons of each program and a private vote was conducted. Wendy Johnson (Science teacher, Latimer Middle School) and Satomi Fujikawa (3rd grade teacher, Country Lane Elementary) shared their input and assessment of the potential curricula as well as the deciding factors in the final selection.  Both the Elementary and Middle School committee members selected StemScopes as the new Science Curriculum adoption beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Teachers will be able to choose a 1-day training in June, August, or September and there will be two additional trainings during District collaboration time. Board members approved the adoption of StemScopes science curriculum for both elementary and middle schools.
  • Board members voted to select Melissa Baten Caswell (Palo Alto USD) in the run-off election for the CSBA Delegate Assembly - Region 20.
  • Other annual personnel items, contracts/contract adjustments, and consent agenda items were also approved.
Dr. Going and the Board of Trustees recognized the staff of Anderson School for their recent award as a Top Bay Area Public School for Raising Math Scores.  The award is given by the group Innovate Public Schools. Principal, Tasha Quinonez, and Assistant Principal, Jodi Rubino were joined by Anderson staff to receive a plaque that can be displayed in their school office.
