Fall 2020 Updates

The School of Law’s faculty and staff have been carefully reviewing all options for the Fall academic semester with the primary goal of protecting the health and safety of our law school community. After careful consideration, we have revised our Fall 2020 Academic Calendar and have adjusted our course schedule to allow for physical distancing within classroom settings, decreased density on-campus, and alternate modes of instruction.

Newly enrolled first-year (1L) students will be registered for courses by the Office of Records & Registration by Monday, August 3rd if a) their official, baccalaureate degree-noted transcript has been received by the Law School Admission Council and b) they have met the University's immunizations requirements and have cleared all other holds on their record. New students will receive a notification email once they have been enrolled in fall courses. Newly enrolled LLM students should continue to work with their advisors to develop their fall schedules.

Classes will include a mix of online, in-person, and hybrid courses. Any student who prefers to participate in remote classes only will be accommodated.  We will contact you about that option in the near future. For more information about our general policies related to our Fall 2020 courses, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions page [View Here].

Our Revised Academic Calendar for Fall 2020

Our Fall 2020 Academic Calendar has been updated [View Here], abbreviating the length of the fall semester and reducing the need for travel throughout the semester in order to decrease the spread of COVID-19. Please review the new calendar carefully and note the following:

1. Our start dates remain the same. A virtual orientation will be held for all new students from Monday, August 24th through Friday, August 28th.  LAWR I will meet during Orientation Week and on Monday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 1st.  All upper level and 1L doctrinal classes begin on Wednesday, September 2nd.

2. Classes will be held on Labor Day, Monday, September 7th.

3. Classes will be held on Tuesday, October 13th through Friday, October 16th, our previously scheduled Study and Review Days.

4. Our last day of classes will be Tuesday, November 24th, just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

5. Our Reading Day period will be expanded and will extend from Saturday, November 28th through Sunday, December 6th. Voluntary online review sessions may be held during that time. Your professor will reach out to you directly if he or she plans to hold a review session.

6. All final exams will be administered online between Monday, December 7th and Friday, December 18th.

As we continue to experience the uncertainty of the pandemic’s course, it may be necessary for us to make further revisions as events unfold. Please be assured that we will do all that we possibly can to minimize disruption to your legal education and to provide you with a safe learning environment.

We will continue to share updates and information as it is available. Over the coming weeks, you may receive various announcements from the University. Please remember that the law school’s calendar varies from the broader UB academic calendar. Be sure to watch for new School of Law Updates, and frequently check our COVID-19: Law School Planning and Response webpage.
For questions or concerns regarding these updates, please contact the Office of Records & Registration at law-records@buffalo.edu or 716-645-2060.
