Dean's Message

Dear Alumni and Friends
of the Division of Humanities & the Arts:

It continues to be an honor and a pleasure to work with our accomplished and dedicated faculty and our remarkable students in the Division of Humanities & the Arts.  As the new semester begins, we would like to share some of our exciting fall news.
Professor András Kiséry (English) received a NEH Award for Faculty, following in the wake of last year’s H&A recipient, Professor Mikhal Dekel (English).
Professor Jennifer Morton (Philosophy) received the American Philosophical Association's inaugural Israel Scheffler Prize in Philosophy of Education.
Professor Michelle Valladares (English) was named the Americas Poetry Festival of New York’s Poet of the Year.

Our annual Langston Hughes Festival culminated in the conferral of the Langston Hughes Medal on celebrated novelist Zadie Smith

Professor Mike Holober (Music) became The City College of New York’s inaugural Stuart Z. Katz Professor in the Humanities & the Arts.
Students in our stellar Branding + Integrated Communications (MCA) program continue to excel nationally.
Professors Andrea Weiss, an Emmy award winner, and Antonio Tibaldi (MCA) both had critically acclaimed films premiere this fall.  (Professor Weiss’s film “Bones of Contention” was selected as one of the 2017 Best Documentaries by TheWrap.)
Former student Pam Ralat (MFA in Film, 2010, MCA) received an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Investigative Journalism in Spanish for the documentary “Cosecha de Miseria” (“Harvest of Misery”).

You can watch the film online via Telemundo's YouTube channel:
Professor Herb Boyd’s (Black Studies) Black Detroit: A People’s History of Self-Determination was a finalist for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work in the nonfiction category.

Most recently, former student Rich Prior (EDM BFA, Art) received a Gold Award in the Charity and Non-profit category, 2017 International Visual Identity Awards.
We have much to celebrate in the inspiring examples of those faculty and students, and we invite you, our alumni and friends, to participate in the vibrant life of our innovative academic community. Follow announcements of events and accomplishments on Twitter (@CCNYHumArts), and friend us on Facebook (!
