Safer Baby

Update #1 - September 2019

Preparing for lift off…

The Stillbirth CRE Safer Baby Bundle Education Committee, along with evidence working groups for each element of the bundle, has been working overtime to finalise the materials that are being turned into interactive and engaging eLearning resources by our communication agency, 89 Degrees East.

If you would like us to add others in your organisation to the distribution list for this (including communications staff who want advance notice) please email the CRE or subscribe by clicking the button below.

Launch of Safer Baby Bundle Clinician Resources

On Tuesday 15th October the Minister for Health, Greg Hunt MP, will launch the new clinician resources which include the Safer Baby Bundle Handbook, the eLearning module and downloadable resources for women.

We invite you to join us for the launch at Parliament House, Canberra from 12pm-1pm. Once the details have been finalised we can provide a written brief on the event. Please note this is also International Pregnancy Loss Remembrance Day and the RANZCOG Conference is being held in Melbourne.

Technical Platform for eLearning

The Safer Baby Bundle Education Committee has been working overtime to finalise the materials that are being turned into interactive and engaging eLearning resources by our communication agency, 89 Degrees East.

Following a review of all available platforms, our design team (from 89 Degrees East) have chosen the Moodle platform as it allows the best user experience, along with the greatest customisation and flexibility for future extensions. Consultations occurred with the technical teams from each jurisdiction about the possibility of integrating platforms with existing eLearning offerings and accreditation systems, but the wide array of platforms and technical requirements have prohibited the build of an integrated program at this stage.

Therefore, our plan is:

  • for the eLearning materials to be provided to each of our partners in the Safer Baby Bundle as a link that you can share with relevant staff, members and internal accreditation teams
  • that the eLearning materials be offered for free in the first 3 years of operation
  • that we work collaboratively to develop a communications campaign to ensure that all clinicians are made aware of the materials and encouraged to complete them within 4 months of their release – this gives them the opportunity to undertake and become accredited with the new Safer Baby Bundle Certificate prior to the planned public awareness campaign.

As you may be aware the Government is also about to tender out for a public awareness campaign to support the stillbirth prevention messages contained in the Safer Baby Bundle.  We are hopeful that this public campaign will be strongly aligned with the clinician focused campaign and materials so that all those involved are ‘singing from the same songsheet’ when it comes to stillbirth awareness and prevention across Australia.

What is included in the Safer Baby Bundle eLearning Module?

For those that haven’t been closely involved in the development of the new eLearning materials, here is an overview of what is involved:

Six chapters, including an Introductory chapter then one each for:

  • Smoking Cessation
  • Decreased Fetal Movements
  • Fetal Growth Restriction
  • Side Sleeping
  • Timing of Birth decisions

Each chapter will take around 20 minutes to complete, with interactive quizzes and a ‘case study’ to reinforce learning in each chapter.

An assessment of multiple choice questions based on the Key Learning Points within each chapter.

Videos, printed materials and other resources that support the learning materials in each chapter.

Once practitioners complete all chapters and the assessment, they will be provided with a Certificate and able to apply for CPD points from the relevant body.
