Attracting Talent and Growing Businesses

Take Advantage of These Incentives
The City of St. Petersburg has assembled incentives to help grow local businesses.  One, in particular, is targeted at helping businesses create jobs in key industries - the Grow Smarter Job Creation and Talent Attraction Program.

This program provides awards to companies with 49 employees or less that hire new employees at salaries above Pinellas County's average wage. Companies must be identified with one of the city's five target industry clusters: Marine and Life Sciences, Specialized Manufacturing, Financial Services, Data Analytics, and Creative Arts and Design.

For each new job created at 115% or more of the average county wage, the incentive amount is $3,000 per new job. Greater awards are available to companies paying higher wages. For each new job created and filled by a resident of the City of St. Petersburg, there will be a bonus $2,000 incentive paid and for each job created and filled by a resident of the South St. Petersburg Community Redevelopment Area, there will be a bonus $3,000 incentive paid. Employees hired under this Program must remain employed by the company for at least twelve months for the company to claim the incentive. The incentive will be paid at the end of the twelve-month period.

Useful Toolkit That Can Help Tell the St. Pete Story
The Innovation District’s goal is to help St. Petersburg grow smarter, from recruiting great employees, to starting or moving businesses here, to continue to be a great place to visit.

To help promote St. Pete, members of the Grow Smarter initiative developed a great toolkit to make the job easier.  The toolkit provides copy, facts, and visuals that can be used in promotional materials. Links to additional resources are also included so you can more quickly access the information that is important to your target audience.

Reprinting an article by Margie Manning from the St. Pete Catalyst, May 24, 2019

Seventy percent of the IT employers in Tampa Bay say there’s a moderate-to-extreme skills shortage in the area. It will take changes in culture, hiring practices and education to close the talent gap, said David Brown, CEO of Hays US.  Brown unveiled the findings of a Hays survey conducted for Tampa Bay Tech at poweredUP, the organization’s technology festival.

“As Tampa Bay’s tech community continues to grow, so too does the challenge of finding and retaining top tech talent,” said Jill St. Thomas, executive director of Tampa Bay Tech, Florida’s largest technology council.
