Hello runners!

Sincere gratitude to each one of you who has graced SFRRC with your attention and good hearts. We are better because of you. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.

While we’ve unofficially been using it as a guiding principle for the past year, this past fall our Board approved our new Mission Statement: To build and strengthen the running community in San Francisco while inspiring and supporting people in the process.

Our hope is to make SFRRC a place where the running community thrives; where we care for each other's well being and happiness; where kindness is the culture; and where our goals and dreams can become reality. On top of it all, we want everybody, including newcomers, to feel they are part of a warm and authentic community where runners of all paces are equally welcomed and loved.

2019 was a big year for us. In our 18 years of existence, only once before (in February 2014) has the San Francisco Road Runners had more than 500 members. We broke through that barrier at our 2019 Kickoff and have been at or above that threshold every month of 2019. To each one of you who ran with us or completed a 5k or Half or even Marathon or longer this year... You are awesome!! Congrats.

Here’s a recap of some things that we accomplished this past year:

  • In the spring, we had the 1st SFRRC Running Camp up in Occidental. It sold-out its 45 participant capacity and in our post-retreat survey 100% of those who took the survey said they'd like to return. Our 2nd run camp returns the first weekend in May this year.

  • In late-Spring, we ran the Strava Art “SFRRC RUNS SF” on the streets of San Francisco just above Golden Gate Park. If you haven’t joined our club on Strava, you should join.

  • We also began visually mapping our routes on Strava. Thank you, Lisa and Adam!

  • We debuted our running “Book Club” to challenge us intellectually and get us thinking differently. Thank you Aude for leading it for us!

  • Thanks to our Membership Team, in 2019 we also began our occasional Brewery Runs from Fort Point Brew Co. at the Ferry Building. More finish locations are coming this year including Anchor Steam Public Taps.

  • On the 4th of July, 60 runners gave it their best shot our first official "SFRRC Mile." It was exactly that: One Mile (1609 meters) run at Kezar Stadium.

  • Inspired by our guest yoga instructor from our Running Camp, we started a monthly "Yoga for Runners" evening in the fall. They will begin again this spring.

  • SFRRC's "inaugural" Fall Running Retreat took place in Pacifica and filled to our limit of 35 runners. We had beautiful weather and two gorgeous runs, a world-class guest speaker, beach/water time, and yoga on the beach to aid in the "retreat" for us all.

  • We also began shoe donations with Soles4Souls. We had learned about the organization at the RRCA National Convention and will increase opportunities for giving in 2020.

  • We picked-up our volunteering this past year, bringing back the Kaiser Half and JP Morgan Corporate Challenge to our on-course volunteer participation and had 28 water stop volunteers at The SF Marathon. We also helped our fellow club member and race organizer, Ryan McDermott, as course marshals along the Presidio Coyote 10k Dash.

  • We continued our post-Saturday Run tamales (thanks to a volunteer stipend given to us by the SF Marathon), bowling night and, of course, our annual club party.

Some of the additional programs and activities happening:

  • In our second year, our "Member of the Month" designation highlights members who bring a particularly positive contribution to our community. See our amazing recipients and read about their journey and tips in our Member of the Month section.

  • We began our Club Ambassador team in 2018 to help give comfort to new/potential members, plus presence and encouragement everywhere. We look forward to continuing to bring the joy of our club near and far. And hopefully, you'll get to have a donut or two that our Ambassadors occasionally bring for after our Saturday Runs.

  • We’ve been giving more attention to our Race Captain program to make our member's marathon experience is a little easier and more enjoyable (with pre-race emails, club/team meal, photos, and other logistical suggestions)

  • We’re continuing to build healthy relationships with the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and our local running groups: Impalas, PaMaKids, Dolphin South End Runners (DSE Runners) and others, our local running/sports stores: A Runner's Mind and Sports Basement, plus club sponsors: Science in Sport, Ample, and nonprofits: Back on My Feet, and more.

  • We began our Movie Nights in 2018 and continued them in 2019. We hope you’ll join us this year! We’ve filled the room capacity every showing. Thanks, Alejandra for hosting these. Always an inspiring evening.

  • We’ve continued our Club Nights bringing in Olympians, world-record holders, popular coaches, and others to educate and inspire each one of us.

  • For the second year, we celebrated Global Running Day with a sunset run from Sports Basement led by our Club Ambassadors and co-sponsored by The Giants Race.

  • And as you may have noticed that SFRRC has recommitted itself to social media. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

  • Continually we are striving to provide clean, clear, and attractive communication for email.

  • Our website is in the midst of a refresh right now.

And the people who make this all happen... Thank you!! You are so wonderful to us. We must begin with the lifeblood of this club - our Pace Group Leaders (PGLs)! Please share your appreciation with these amazing leaders for guiding us through our city each Saturday. And please do the same for our other front line, our Club Ambassadors, who help us welcome newcomers at Saturday run and so much more.

Our most sincere thank you, also, to our coaches and our Board of Directors for their time and commitment. We wouldn't be here without you. On our Board this past year we added in a new Volunteer Coordinator role. And over the past couple of years, we've added directors for our Saturday Breakfasts, Sponsorships, and our Club Ambassador program, in addition to expanding our Membership role to three directors.

We are confident that SFRRC will continue to be a place that provides a safe, supportive, and inspiring community for runners in the San Francisco Bay.

We love seeing you at our Saturday club runs, Sunday trails (thanks Bill!), Tuesday track, Wednesday at Presidio Sports Basement (thanks Club Ambassadors!), and Thursdays on the Embarcadero (thanks Susan!). And we're committed to serving you with kindness, love, and a touch of class. For as was once shared, “it’s harder to be kind than clever.” So, let’s do this.

Whether you've been an active member of the club, brand new, or just considering returning, we invite you to come and run with us this year. What a joy it all is, but moves so quickly. You’ve changed my life and I hope we’ve improved yours a little as well.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and hopeful 2020. Happy New Year, everybody!
We look forward to seeing you!
