Forest Industry Situation Report as at 6 May 2020

Current Situation:
  • The harvesting, haulage, processing and export of forestry products is continuing – despite some significant impacts and challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • COVID-19 is impacting global trade and export markets for forest products in complex ways, with different countries at different stages in dealing with the coronavirus crisis.
  •  Whole log exports are recovering from recent lows with increased demand and improved prices. Whole log exports continue to Asian destinations including China and Malaysia.  Stocks on Chinese ports are reducing as China returns to work.

Working with industry to protect and build Tasmania's forestry sector

The Tasmanian Liberal Government recognises that forestry is a cornerstone of our economy and has a key role to play in our plan to rebuild a stronger Tasmania.

We have been facilitating a series of industry round tables for key sectors including agriculture, renewable energy, forestry and resources, to identify challenges and help Tasmanian businesses continue to operate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government understands that key production and export sectors such as forestry, underpin our economy, create thousands of jobs and support rural and regional communities.

EOI for Webinar Working Group

The Network is calling for EOIs for Working Group volunteers to assist with delivering webinars throughout the remainder of 2020. As face-to-face events remain restricted, we are looking to deliver a series of webinars to benefit our members and keep us connected.

Working Group members will assist in identifying topics and speakers that are relevant, engaging and provide value to our members.

TFFPN Coronavirus Survey - individual check-in

Thank you to all who completed our short survey, developed to better understand our members challenges and concerns from COVID-19 on an individual level. 

The feedback showed that the top three individual concerns are; working effectively, social isolation and health and wellbeing.

The Network will continue to address these issues through our Bulletin and aim to provide practical advice and tips on navigating our new normal landscape to promote remaining connected, effective and healthy. 
Another Virtual Coffee success!
The Network's second Virtual Coffee session was held via zoom last Friday, with ten members joining for a 30-minute morning coffee break! In the coming sessions, we'd like to turn our discussion to the recovery from COVID-19.

Next coffee session will be Friday 15th May at 10:30am.
